The Hands on Offense: Mastering Route Running and Ball Security with the Catch and Run Drill
Developing a well-rounded running back requires more than just elusiveness and power in the running game. They also need to be reliable receiving threats, adept at catching the ball out of the backfield and turning those receptions into yards. The “Catch and Run” drill is a versatile tool that hones your running backs’ route-running skills, ball security, and ability to navigate defenders after the catch, transforming them into complete backs who can contribute through the air as well.
Purpose
Refine Catch-Tuck-Turn Technique: This drill focuses on refining the critical “catch-tuck-turn” technique. Running backs practice catching the ball securely, transitioning smoothly into a running position with the ball tucked away, and then executing a decisive cut to evade defenders.
Enhance Ball Security: A core element of the drill is emphasizing ball security after the catch. Running backs learn to protect the ball by keeping it tucked close to their body while navigating defenders who attempt to jar it loose with shield hits (simulating tackles).
Develop Route-Running Skills: The drill incorporates route running, allowing running backs to practice different routes and sharpen their route-running technique. This prepares them to run a variety of pass patterns effectively in live game situations.
Cultivate Body Control: Throughout the drill, running backs practice maintaining good body control after the catch. This includes keeping their pad level low, hips pointed upfield, and overall balance as they navigate defenders and transition into running mode.
Description
Drill Setup
Gather your running backs and position three defenders with tackling shields downfield in a triangle formation. Space the defenders out appropriately, creating a realistic running lane for the running back to navigate after the catch.
The coach should designate specific routes for the running backs to run, such as flares, screens, or swing passes. This allows for focused practice on different receiving scenarios.
Drill Execution
On the coach’s signal or on quarterback cadence, the running backs begin running their assigned routes. The quarterback (or coach) throws the football to the running back in stride.
As the running back receives the football, they should immediately focus on executing the “catch-tuck-turn” sequence. They secure the ball into their chest, transitioning their body weight and hips forward to gain momentum.
The running back should identify the top defender in the triangle formation (the defender closest to the line of scrimmage) and plan their cut accordingly.
Each defender with a shield will attempt to deliver a “high blow” or “low blow” hit with their shield as the running back approaches them. This simulates a defender attempting to tackle the running back after the catch.
The running back should brace himself for the impact of the first two defenders and react to the third defender movement by utilizing a sharp cut to evade as much contact as possible. He should maintain good body control and keep the ball tucked securely throughout the maneuver.
After successfully navigating the triangle of defenders, the running back should continue running downfield, focusing on maximizing yardage gained on the play.
Progression
Introduce Live Tackling (Optional): For a more advanced challenge, consider incorporating “live” tackling (with proper safety precautions) later in the progression. This allows running backs to experience the intensity of a real game situation while practicing their receiving skills against resisting defenders.
Vary Defender Positioning: Throughout the drill, experiment with different defender positioning within the triangle formation. This challenges the running backs to adjust their cuts and evasion strategies based on the defender placement.
Change Routes and Speeds: As the running backs become comfortable with the drill, incorporate a variety of routes and running speeds. This simulates the diverse receiving situations they might encounter in live games.
Coaching Points
Eyes Downfield After Catch: While emphasizing the importance of catching the ball securely, remind running backs to quickly transition their focus downfield after securing the catch. This allows them to identify defenders and plan their route to gain yards.
Sharp Cuts and Body Control: Focus on the importance of executing sharp, decisive cuts with good body control after the catch. Running backs should avoid telegraphing their cuts and utilize quick footwork to evade defenders.
Run Behind Pads: Emphasize the concept of running “behind their pads” after the catch. This lowers the target area for defenders and helps protect the ball from potential strips.
Finish Strong: Remind running backs to maintain good running form and finish the drill strong, even after navigating the defenders. This translates to maximizing yardage gained after receptions in live games.
