Purpose
- Develop One-Handed Focus: The drill forces WRs to concentrate on catching the ball with just one hand, simulating situations where they might need to shield the ball from a defender or fight for a contested catch.
- Refine Hand-Eye Coordination: The one-handed emphasis challenges WRs to track the ball with their eyes and adjust their hand positioning for a secure catch. This strengthens their hand-eye coordination, a vital skill for all WRs.

Description
Drill Setup
- Group Formation: Line up all participating WRs on one side of the net.
- Starting Position: Position the first WR approximately five yards away from the initial pole of the net.
Drill Execution
- Half-Speed Run and One-Handed Catch: On the coach’s signal, the WR jogs forward at half speed, simulating game-like movement while allowing them to focus on catching mechanics.
- High Arch Throw: The coach or designated thrower throws the ball with a high arc, allowing the WR time to adjust their stride and extend their hand for the catch.
- One-Handed Catch: The WR should reach out with their dominant hand (or designated hand if practicing the non-dominant hand) and focus on catching the ball securely with their fingers.
- Repeat and Switch Sides: Once the WR completes a successful catch, they jog back to the starting position and the drill repeats with the next WR in line. After all WRs have completed a rep from one side, the group switches sides and repeats the drill.
Variation: Multi-Ball Drill (Optional)
- Multiple Balls: For a more challenging variation, incorporate three to four footballs.
- Catch, Reverse, and Repeat: After catching a ball securely with one hand, the WR quickly turns around at the end of the net and receives another throw. This continues until all balls have been thrown.
- Ball Collection and Repeat: Once all balls have been caught, the WRs retrieve them and the drill resumes with the next athlete in line.
Progression
As WRs demonstrate improvement in catching with one hand, the coach can gradually increase the difficulty.
- Increase Running Speed: Slowly increase the WRs’ running speed beyond a jog, mimicking the increased speed of game situations.
- Introduce Route Running: Incorporate basic route concepts into the drill, such as slants or curls, challenging WRs to focus on catching while adjusting their path.
