Pitch Drill

Orchestrating the Pitch: A Drill for Mastering Running Back Pitches

The Pitch Drill is a fundamental tool for developing a dynamic and diverse running game. It hones the intricate timing and execution of the pitch – the moment where the quarterback delivers the ball to the running back in a lateral or backward motion.

Purpose

  • Sharpen Pitch Mechanics: This drill focuses on teaching and refining the precise steps and throws involved in the pitch for both the quarterback and running back. This ensures a smooth, accurate transfer of the ball and minimizes fumbles.
  • Develop Pre-Pitch Timing: The drill emphasizes proper timing during the pre-pitch phase. Running backs learn to run their designated routes with precision, while the quarterback practices delivering the ball at the right moment within the play’s design.
  • Enhance Playbook Versatility: By practicing pitches from various formations and situations, this drill equips running backs with the skills they need to execute a diverse range of pitch plays within the team’s playbook.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Mark the offensive line with linestrip markers or cones, creating a realistic pocket simulation.
  • The quarterback lines up either under center or in shotgun formation behind the “center”.
  • The running back aligns according to the specific play call, positions himself for the designated route in preparation for the pitch or toss.
  • The center (a coach or player) kneels at the center position and snaps or throws the ball to the quarterback.

Drill Execution

  • On the snap count, the running back begins running their designated route according to the play call.
  • The quarterback opens up or steps up in the pocket (depending on the formation) and prepares to pitch the ball.
  • The quarterback executes a firm and accurate throw towards the running back’s chest or midsection.
  • The running back uses proper catching technique to receive the pitch securely, emphasizing large hand targets and good body control.
  • Once the running back secures the catch, he continues the play with his assigned running route.

Progressions

  • Start Slow and Controlled: Begin with slow repetitions to allow players to solidify proper mechanics and timing.
  • Introduce Variations: As players demonstrate proficiency, incorporate pitches from different formations (under center vs. shotgun) and introduce variations in the quarterback’s action (pitch vs toss).
  • Introduce Defenders (Optional): For a more advanced challenge, consider introducing a coach or player acting as a defender who might force the running back to react quickly after receiving the football or the “defender” attempts to strip the ball after the catch.

Coaching Points

  • Precision and Timing: Emphasize precise footwork, throwing mechanics, and overall timing for both the quarterback and running back. This ensures a smooth and efficient pitch, crucial for maximizing offensive efficiency.
  • Ball Security: Stress the importance of ball security throughout the drill. Both the quarterback and running back need to prioritize ball handling techniques to minimize fumbles during the pitch exchange.
  • Route Running: For the running back, emphasize crisp route running with good body control. They should present themselves as a clear target for the quarterback’s throw while staying on their designated path.

Equipment

  • Football(s)
  • Linemen-split marker (or cones) to designate the offensive line
  • Cones (optional, to mark aim points and paths)
