Pass Rush Technique Drill

Sharpening the Arsenal: Pass Rush Technique Drill for Polished Defensive Linemen

The Pass Rush Technique Drill is a fundamental tool for developing a diverse and effective pass rush repertoire in your defensive linemen. This drill focuses on refining individual pass rush moves, allowing linemen to isolate and perfect their technique for various situations. Through repetition and focused coaching, linemen develop a smooth understanding of each pass rush move, enabling them to seamlessly transition between techniques and create pressure on the quarterback. The beauty of this drill lies in its versatility. It requires no equipment, making it a convenient addition to any warm-up routine or practice session.

Purpose

  • Mastering Pass Rush Moves: The primary objective of the drill is to train defensive linemen in the execution of various pass rush techniques. This includes classic moves like the bull rush, rip technique, swim move, and club/cross-chop techniques. By focusing on one move at a time, linemen can refine their hand placement, footwork, and body positioning to achieve optimal effectiveness.
  • Building Confidence: Successful completion of the drill with proper technique builds confidence in the defensive lineman’s ability to utilize different pass rush moves. This translates to more options during live game situations, allowing them to adapt their approach based on the offensive lineman’s blocking scheme.
  • Developing Muscle Memory: Through repetition of each pass rush move, linemen develop muscle memory for proper technique. This allows for quicker and more instinctive execution of the moves during live game situations, maximizing their ability to disrupt the quarterback’s rhythm.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Partner Up: Defensive linemen pair up facing each other, assuming a two-point stance as if ready for a pass rush.
  • Pass Rusher vs. Pass Blocker: Designate one line of players as the pass rushers and the other line as pass blockers. Players can rotate roles throughout the drill for a well-rounded experience.
  • Coach Communication: The coach verbally communicates the specific pass rush technique for the upcoming rep. This could be a bull rush to overpower the blocker, a rip technique to disengage and rush inside, a swim move to bypass the blocker’s outside shoulder, or a club/cross-chop technique to control and redirect the blocker. Additionally, the coach can specify the side (left or right) for the pass rusher to attack.

Drill Execution

  • Drop Back: On the coach’s command (“Go!” or whistle blow), the designated pass blocker simulates dropping back like a typical offensive lineman in a passing situation.
  • Pass Rush and Execute: The pass rusher explodes off the line of scrimmage, focusing on executing the designated pass rush technique with proper hand placement, footwork, and body positioning. The goal is to effectively bypass the pass blocker and get to the simulated quarterback (marked by a cone or coach’s hand).
  • Reset and Repeat: On the coach’s whistle, the players reset to their starting positions. The coach can then call out a different pass rush technique or side of attack to keep the drill dynamic and challenging.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on Technique: Since this is a non-contact drill, emphasize the importance of proper technique for each pass rush move. This includes hand placement (maintain strong hand placement on the blocker’s chest or shoulders), footwork (explosive first step followed by quick, choppy steps), and body positioning (maintain a low center of gravity and leverage throughout the move).
  • Speed and Timing: Stress the importance of speed and timing when executing the pass rush move. A quick first step and a well-timed technique application are crucial for disrupting the blocker and creating pressure on the quarterback.
  • Maintain Leverage: Remind linemen to maintain leverage against the blocker throughout the pass rush move. This allows them to control the blocker’s movement and ultimately win the battle at the point of attack.
  • Transitions: For advanced players, incorporate drills where they transition between different pass rush moves within a single rep. This simulates the need to adapt their approach based on the blocker’s reaction.

Equipment

  • None Required

The Pass Rush Technique Drill is a valuable tool for any defensive line training program. By allowing linemen to isolate and perfect their pass rush moves, this drill contributes to a more diverse and effective pass rush repertoire. This translates to more pressure on the quarterback, disrupted plays, and ultimately, a more dominant defensive unit.
