Net Drills

Mastering Catches with Confidence: The “Net Drills” Variations for Well-Rounded Wide Receivers

The “Net Drill” is a versatile and dynamic tool for developing wide receivers’ (WRs) ability to catch a variety of throws. This drill utilizes a net (think soccer goal with net) to create a controlled environment where WRs can refine their technique for catching high, low, behind-the-shoulder, and other challenging throws. By incorporating different variations and emphasizing key coaching points, the “Net Drill” equips WRs with the confidence and skills to consistently make receptions in game situations.

Purpose

  • Develop Versatility in Catching: The drill exposes WRs to various types of throws, including high, low, mid-section, and behind-the-shoulder passes. This challenges them to adjust their hand positioning, body angles, and leaping ability to secure the ball effectively.
  • Refine Hand-Eye Coordination: Focusing on catching the ball through the net requires WRs to maintain excellent hand-eye coordination throughout the catching motion. This translates to cleaner catches on the field.
  • Enhance Confidence: The controlled environment with the net allows WRs to practice catching difficult throws with confidence, building their trust in their abilities and ultimately leading to more consistent success in games.

Description

Drill Setup

  • WR Positioning: Line up WRs approximately ten yards from the net, positioned sideways (not facing the thrower directly) and five yards in front of the designated throwing area. This starting position simulates situations where WRs might need to adjust their body position to catch a throw.
  • QB or Coach Positioning: Position the QB or coach directly opposite the WRs, at an appropriate distance for throwing various types of passes.

Drill Execution

  • Half-Speed Approach and Catch: On the coach’s signal, the WR jogs across the designated area at half-speed, simulating game-like movement while allowing them to focus on catching mechanics.
  • Throw Variations: The QB or coach throws the ball to different locations in relation to the WR:
    • Mid-Section (Hips to Chest High): This simulates a standard throw that WRs need to catch comfortably with proper hand placement.
    • Low Balls (Below Hips): These throws challenge WRs to bend their knees and extend their hands low to secure the catch.
    • High Balls (Above Head): High throws require WRs to jump and fully extend their arms to make the catch.
    • Behind Balls (Reaching Back): These throws challenge WRs to adjust their body position and reach back with their hands to snag the ball behind their back.
  • Secure, Tuck, and Throw Back: Upon catching the ball, the WRs should immediately tuck it away “high and tight” to their chest for ball security. Following a brief pause to simulate securing the catch, they throw the ball back to the QB or coach.
  • Repeat and Switch Sides: Once a WR completes a catch and throw back, they jog to the opposite side of the net and line up for their turn again. The drill repeats for all WRs, allowing them to practice catching throws from both sides.

Variation

  • Multi-Ball Drill (Optional): For a more challenging variation, incorporate multiple footballs (2-4) into the drill. After catching the first ball and throwing it back, the WR quickly turns around and sprints back across the area to receive another throw. This continues until all balls have been thrown and caught. Repeat this variation with each WR, allowing them to practice catching multiple passes in rapid succession.

Coaching Points

  • Proper Hand Placement: Emphasize the importance of adjusting hand placement based on the throw location. For high throws, instruct WRs to create a large target with their hands above their head. For low throws, hands should be extended low and ready to scoop the ball.
  • Eyes on the Ball: Stress the importance of maintaining focus on the ball throughout the entire catching motion. This ensures they track the ball’s trajectory and adjust their positioning accordingly.
  • Body Control and Adjustments: Instruct WRs to utilize proper body control and adjustments to reach for throws outside their immediate range. This might involve a jump for high throws, a dip of the hips for low throws, or a quick turn for behind-the-back throws.
  • Secure the Catch: Emphasize the importance of securing the catch with both hands before attempting to throw the ball back. A secure catch is crucial to avoid fumbles and turnovers.
  • “High and Tight” Tuck: Instruct WRs to practice the proper “high and tight” tucking technique, bringing the ball close to their chest with their elbows tucked in for optimal ball security.
  • Follow-Through: For the multi-ball variation, remind WRs to maintain a smooth throwing motion after catching each ball and transitioning back to receive the next throw. This helps maintain rhythm and mimics the quick throws seen in game situations.

Equipment

  • Footballs
  • Net (e.g., a soccer goal with net or similar)
  • Quarterback (QB) or Coach (for throwing the ball)

The “Net Drills” with its variations is a valuable tool for developing well-rounded WRs who can confidently catch a wide variety of throws. By incorporating this drill into their practice routine, WRs can refine their hand positioning, body control, and catching technique, ultimately leading to more consistent success on the field. WRs emerge from this drill with the confidence to attack any throw, minimize drops, and contribute significantly to the team’s offensive success.
