Tip Drill

Reacting to the Unexpected: The Linebacker Tip Drill

The Linebacker Tip Drill is designed to develop a linebacker’s ability to react quickly to a tipped pass and secure an interception. This drill emphasizes anticipation, ball-tracking skills, and the ability to adjust to unexpected changes in the flight path of the ball.

Purpose

  • Anticipation and Reaction: This drill trains linebackers to anticipate tipped passes and react swiftly to secure interceptions. It develops their ability to quickly change direction and adjust their body position to intercept a ball that may be traveling in an unpredictable trajectory.
  • Ball-Tracking and Hand-Eye Coordination: Linebackers practice tracking the ball after it has been tipped, focusing on hand-eye coordination and the ability to adjust their hands to secure the interception.
  • Interception Technique: The drill reinforces proper interception technique, including using the hands to secure the ball and tucking it away for protection.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Player Positioning: Two linebackers position themselves approximately 4-6 yards apart in a ready stance.
  • Passer: A coach or designated player acts as the passer, standing approximately 10-12 yards away from the first linebacker.

Drill Execution

  • Passer’s Action: The passer throws the ball towards the first linebacker with enough height for the linebacker to deflect it.
  • Tip and Intercept: The first linebacker attempts to tip the ball in the air without catching it. The second linebacker, anticipating the tipped pass, reacts quickly and attempts to intercept the ball.
  • Secure and Return: If the second linebacker secures the interception, they tuck the ball away and sprint forward, simulating a return.

Progressions and Variations

  • Varying Tip Locations: To increase the challenge, the passer can vary the location of the tipped pass (e.g., left, right, in front). This forces the second linebacker to adjust their pursuit and interception angles accordingly.
  • Different Ball Trajectories: The passer can vary the trajectory of the pass (e.g., line drive, high arching pass) to challenge the linebackers’ ability to adjust their interception technique.

By incorporating these varitaions and progressions, the Linebacker Tip Drill becomes a valuable tool for developing linebackers who can capitalize on tipped passes and create turnovers. As linebackers master the skills of anticipation, reaction, and ball-tracking, they become more confident and instinctive in their ability to make plays on the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Tipping Technique: The first linebacker should focus on using their hands to deflect the ball upwards without catching it. The goal is to create a catchable (but not too easy) opportunity for the second linebacker.
  • Anticipation and Reaction: The second linebacker should anticipate the tipped pass and react explosively to secure the interception. Emphasis should be placed on quickness, change of direction, and adjusting to the ball’s unpredictable flight path.
  • Interception Technique: Reinforce proper interception technique, including using the hands to secure the ball and tucking it away for protection.
  • Ball Tracking: Encourage linebackers to maintain focus on the ball throughout the drill, both when tipping and attempting to intercept. Good ball-tracking skills are essential for making plays on tipped passes.

Equipment

  • Footballs

The Linebacker Tip Drill is essential for developing linebackers with exceptional ball-hawking skills. This drill hones their ability to react quickly to tipped passes, secure interceptions, and create turnovers. By emphasizing anticipation, ball-tracking, and proper interception technique, the Linebacker Tip Drill equips linebackers with the tools to become playmakers on defense. As linebackers master this drill, they become more confident and instinctive in their ability to capitalize on unexpected opportunities.
