Buddy Break Drill

Buddy Break Drill: Enhancing Zone Coverage and Ball-Hawking Skills

The Buddy Break Drill is designed to improve a defensive back’s ability to read the quarterback, break on the ball, and make interceptions. This drill emphasizes footwork, reaction time, and ball-tracking skills.

Purpose

  • Ball-Hawking Instincts: Develops the ability to anticipate the quarterback’s throwing intentions and react quickly to the pass.
  • Footwork and Agility: Enhances footwork, balance, and change of direction skills necessary for breaking on the ball.
  • Interception Technique: Refines the technique for intercepting passes, including hand placement and ball security.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Pair defensive backs together.
  • One pair at a time lines up approximately 4 yards in front of a coach or designated passer.

Drill Execution

  • Backpedaling: Both defensive backs begin in a backpedal, maintaining a close proximity to each other.
  • Coach’s Cue: The passer simulates a quarterback by turning his body to indicate a potential passing target, and the defensive backs weave in that direction.
  • Breaking on the Ball: Defensive backs quickly break in the direction the passer is looking as he initiates his throwing motion, with the goal of intercepting a pass thrown in that direction.
  • Interception Technique: Defensive backs focus on catching the ball at the highest point possible and securing the catch when attempting to intercept the ball.
  • Disrupt the Pass: If the defensive back can’t make the catch, he should try to make sure his partner can’t either, either by deflecting the pass or by trying to strip the ball from him as soon as he touches it until he secures it.

Coaching Points

  • Eye Discipline: Emphasize maintaining focus on the coach’s body language to anticipate the passing target.
  • Backpedal Technique: Encourage proper backpedaling technique, including short, choppy steps and a balanced stance.
  • Breaking on the Ball: Stress the importance of a quick and decisive break, using the hips to initiate the change of direction.
  • Interception Technique: Reinforce catching the ball at the highest point possible and ball security when intercepting the pass.

Equipment
