Piano Drill

The Piano Drill: Mastering Footwork and Body Control for Linebackers

The Piano Drill is a fundamental exercise designed to refine a linebacker’s footwork, body control, and reaction to low blocks. This drill incorporates a series of shuffle steps and controlled movements, mimicking a linebacker’s footwork when engaging with offensive linemen attempting to cut them off during running plays.

Purpose

  • Enhanced Footwork: The drill emphasizes proper footwork technique with quick, choppy shuffle steps. Linebackers develop agility and balance while maintaining a low center of gravity, allowing them to react swiftly and efficiently to low blocks.
  • Body Control and Flexibility: The controlled shuffles and transitions from low position to upright stance challenge a linebacker’s body control and flexibility. This drill helps them maintain proper posture and leverage throughout their movements.
  • Reaction to Low Blocks: By simulating the lateral movements and low body position needed to defeat cut blocks, the Piano Drill prepares linebackers to react effectively and maintain their gap integrity against offensive linemen attempting to seal them off.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Starting Position: Linebackers assume a proper athletic stance facing a designated line or cones (simulating the offensive line). Their outside foot (foot furthest from the line) should be slightly back, and their knees should be slightly bent. Backs should be flat, chests over knees, and heads held high with eyes focused on the target line.

Drill Execution

  • Shuffle Back: On the coach’s signal, linebackers initiate two quick shuffle steps backwards while maintaining their low center of gravity and proper body position. These shuffle steps should be short, choppy, and emphasize maintaining balance and proper footwork technique.
  • Low Block Simulation: Following the two shuffle steps back, linebackers transition into a controlled movement that simulates taking on a low block. They should explosively shuffle forward and reach down with both hands, touching the target line (or cones) as if engaging with an offensive lineman attempting a cut block.
  • Repeat and Switch Legs: Linebackers repeat this sequence of two shuffle steps back and a low block simulation for a total of three repetitions. Once complete, they should switch their stance so their other foot is slightly back and repeat the entire sequence on the other side.

Coaching Points

  • Footwork Focus: Emphasize proper footwork throughout the drill. Linebackers should take quick, choppy shuffle steps with a heel-to-toe transition. Remind them to avoid lunging or taking large strides, which can disrupt balance and hinder agility.
  • Low Center of Gravity: Stress the importance of maintaining a low center of gravity throughout the drill. Knees should remain slightly bent, and backs should be flat. This allows linebackers to react quickly to changes in direction and maintain leverage against blockers.
  • Eyes Up and Outside Leg Back: Continually remind linebackers to keep their heads up with eyes focused on the target line (or designated area mimicking the offensive lineman). Their outside leg (foot furthest from the target) should be slightly back in their stance for optimal balance and reaction time.
  • Explosive Transitions: While maintaining proper form, encourage linebackers to perform the shuffle steps and low block simulation with explosive movements. This explosiveness translates to their ability to react swiftly and defeat low blocks on the field.
  • Proper Hand Placement: When simulating the low block engagement, focus on proper hand placement. Linebackers should reach down with both hands, palms flat, and make contact with the target line at an appropriate leverage point.

Equipment

  • Line or cones (as targets)

The Piano Drill is a valuable tool for developing well-rounded linebackers with the agility, body control, and reaction skills necessary to excel against run plays. By incorporating this drill into your training program, you equip your linebackers with the foundation to defeat low blocks, maintain gap integrity, and effectively disrupt offensive schemes. The drill’s simplicity allows for easy implementation, and its effectiveness translates to improved performance on the field. So, grab a line or some cones and get your linebackers moving with the Piano Drill – their ability to shut down the run game will thank you for it!
