Pass Block Footwork Drill

Mastering the Set: The Pass Block Footwork Drill for Offensive Linemen

The Pass Block Footwork Drill is another cornerstone in our series focusing on fundamental footwork mechanics for various offensive line (OL) techniques. This drill hones the crucial initial steps and body positioning necessary for a strong pass set, the foundation for effective pass protection against defensive pass rushers. By incorporating key coaching points, variations, and a clear progression, this drill equips offensive linemen with the explosive footwork, proper body positioning, and powerful movements needed to establish a dominant pass set and effectively wall off defenders throughout the play.

Purpose

  • Develop Pass Set Footwork: The drill isolates and refines the initial steps and body movements necessary for a strong pass set. Linemen practice exploding out of their stance, engaging in a powerful kick step with the outside foot, and maintaining proper body positioning to create a stable base for pass protection.
  • Explosive Movements and Body Control: The drill emphasizes the importance of generating power through the legs and core to propel linemen out of their stance with an explosive first step. Additionally, it reinforces proper body positioning and footwork mechanics for establishing a balanced and secure pass set posture.
  • Dominating Pass Protection: By mastering the pass set footwork, linemen can establish a dominant initial block against defensive pass rushers. This creates a strong pocket for the quarterback and disrupts the defender’s timing and approach, allowing the offense to execute their passing scheme effectively.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Ready Position: Instruct linemen to assume a relaxed “ready position” several yards behind the line of scrimmage, as outlined in the Offensive Line Stance Drill.
  • Pass Blocking Scenario: Explain the importance of a strong pass set in protecting the quarterback. Remind linemen to visualize the defender they will be blocking and the need to establish a quick and effective block to disrupt their rush.

Drill Execution

  • Snap into Stance: On the coach’s whistle or verbal command (e.g., “Set!” or “Hut!”), linemen must explosively snap into their three-point stance.
  • Footwork Focus: Following the snap into stance, linemen focus on their pass set footwork. On the coach’s cadence (e.g., “Hut-Hut”), they explode out of their stance and freeze after their first step. This allows them to isolate and perfect the explosive kick step with the outside foot, crucial for establishing a strong initial block.

Progression

  • Gradual Refinement: Once linemen demonstrate consistent success with the first-step freeze, the coach can progress the drill. The next step involves working on both the first step (kick step) and the full pass set sequence, emphasizing proper body positioning and hand placement.
  • Mirror Drill Variation (Optional): As an optional variation, coaches can introduce a “mirror drill” where linemen face a partner mimicking a defender’s pass rush moves. This allows linemen to practice adjusting their footwork and body positioning in reaction to the defender’s movement, simulating a more realistic pass blocking scenario.

Coaching Points

  • Explosive Kick Step: Emphasize a powerful kick step with the outside foot, driving the foot back aggressively to gain immediate depth and establish a strong base.
  • Controlled Inside Foot: The inside foot should drag or slide slightly back, maintaining contact with the ground and always remaining in front of the outside foot for proper balance.
  • Setting Pass Set Posture: Following the kick step, guide linemen through proper pass set posture:
    • Butt Down: Hips should be lowered to create a strong base and maintain leverage against the defender.
    • Shoulders and Head Back: Shoulders and head should be rolled back slightly, creating a wider target for the defender’s initial rush and preventing them from getting underneath the block.
    • Hips and Shoulders Square (Initially): Initially, hips and shoulders should be square to the line of scrimmage, allowing linemen to react to the defender’s rush direction. As the play progresses, linemen may need to adjust their body positioning to maintain control of the block.
  • Hand Placement: Remind linemen to keep their hands in front of their chest with elbows in, thumbs up and fingers out and ready to strike, prepared to parry the defender’s initial rush and maintain control of the blocking position.

The Pass Block Footwork Drill is a valuable tool for developing confident and effective pass protectors. By incorporating this drill into their practice routine, linemen can refine their initial pass set steps, master proper body positioning for a strong base, and develop the explosive movements and hand placement techniques necessary to dominate pass rushers and create a clean pocket for the quarterback. As linemen progress through the series of footwork drills, they will develop a comprehensive skillset to excel in various blocking techniques and become a reliable force on the offensive line, ultimately contributing to a successful offensive attack.
