W Drill

The W Drill: Developing Agility and Ball-Hawking Instincts

The W Drill is designed to enhance a defensive back’s agility, change of direction, and ball-hawking instincts. By simulating various movement patterns and incorporating ball-handling elements, this drill prepares players for the dynamic nature of defensive coverage.

Purpose

  • Agility and Change of Direction: Develops explosive lateral movement, hip fluidity, and the ability to quickly change direction.
  • Backpedal Proficiency: Reinforces proper backpedaling technique, including footwork, balance, and hip control.
  • Ball-Hawking Instincts: Encourages anticipation and reaction to the ball, simulating opportunities for interceptions and forced fumbles.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Create a “W” shape on the field using cones. The specific dimensions of the “W” can be adjusted based on the players’ level and the desired intensity of the drill. You can also extend the drill by using 2 additional cones to simply extend the “W” shaped pattern.

Drill Execution

  • Starting Position: Defensive backs begin at the bottom point of the “W” formation.
  • Backpedal and Break: Players backpedal diagonally to the first cone, plant their foot, and explode forward, changing direction to the next cone.
  • Repeat Pattern: Defensive backs continue the pattern, creating the shape of a “W” with their movements.
  • Ball Handling: After completing the “W” pattern, the coach can introduce a ball, simulating a pass or fumble recovery scenario. Players can practice catching, securing, and protecting the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Backpedal Technique: Emphasize proper backpedaling technique, including short, choppy steps, maintaining balance, and keeping the hips square.
  • Explosive Change of Direction: Encourage quick, decisive changes of direction with a strong drive through the hips.
  • Ball-Hawking Instincts: Stress the importance of anticipating the ball’s location and reacting quickly to potential interceptions or fumbles.
  • Ball Security: When practicing ball-handling, emphasize proper technique for securing the ball and protecting it from potential turnovers.

Equipment

  • Footballs
  • 5-7 Cones

By incorporating the W Drill into their training regimen, defensive backs will develop the agility, speed, and ball-hawking instincts necessary for success at the highest level.
