Sideline Plays Defense: Sideline Tackling Drill for Defensive Backs
The Sideline Tackling Drill is designed to refine a defensive back’s ability to execute tackles in close proximity to the sideline. This drill emphasizes proper technique, pursuit angles, and the use of the sideline as an additional defender.
Purpose
- Tackling Technique: Reinforces proper tackling fundamentals, including footwork, hand placement, and body positioning.
- Sideline Tackling: Develops the ability to make effective tackles while utilizing the sideline to assist in stopping the ball carrier.
- Angle of Pursuit: Enhances the defensive back’s ability to take efficient pursuit angles to the ball carrier.
Description
Drill Setup
- Set up 2 lines facing each other 10 yards apart, 6 yards from the sideline. Mark these starting points with cones.
- Place a third cone in the middle, also about 6 yards from the sideline.
Drill Execution
- On the coach’s command, the defensive back begins to backpedal 2 or 3 steps, then breaks and runs forward to his original starting point.
- At the time the defensive back breaks, the ball carrier runs toward a point between the sideline and the middle cone.
- The ball carrier then tries to get past the tackler by either running along the sideline or cutting back into the field.
- The defensive back either tackles the ball carrier (emphasis inside-out) or pushes him out-of-bounds.
Coaching Points
- Tackling Fundamentals: Reinforce proper tackling technique, including eye placement, shoulder tackling, and driving through the tackle.
- Angle of Pursuit: Emphasize the importance of taking an inside-out angle to the ball carrier and forcing him towards the sideline.
- Footwork and Balance: Encourage quick, controlled steps and maintaining a low center of gravity for optimal balance and power.
- Hand Placement: Stress the importance of using the hands to secure the tackle and prevent fumbling.
- Using the Sideline: Teach defensive backs to utilize the sideline as an additional defender by forcing the ball carrier out of bounds.
Equipment
- Footballs (for ball carriers)
- Cones to designate starting positions and boundaries.
By mastering the Sideline Tackling Drill, defensive backs will develop the skills and confidence needed to excel in making tackles near the sideline, a critical aspect of defensive play.
