High Knees Drill

Ignite Your Footwork: The High Knees Drill for Agile Linebackers

The High Knees Drill is a fundamental agility exercise designed to enhance a linebacker’s movement on the field. By incorporating high knee action and navigating obstacles, this drill improves a linebacker’s ability to change direction quickly, maintain balance, and develop the footwork necessary for sideline-to-sideline coverage and explosive plays.

Purpose

  • Enhanced Agility: The drill promotes quick changes in direction and efficient footwork, allowing linebackers to react swiftly to plays developing in different areas of the field.
  • Improved Flexibility: The high knee action increases a linebacker’s range of motion in the hips and knees, enhancing their ability to contort their body and maintain proper form during cuts and lateral movements.
  • Sharpened Footwork: By focusing on proper foot placement and driving off the balls of their feet, linebackers refine their footwork, leading to smoother transitions and sharper cuts during game situations.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Bag Placement: Arrange five large step-over bags in a straight line, spaced far enough apart to allow linebackers to comfortably run over them without altering their normal stride. The spacing should encourage a full and natural stride length, avoiding the need for shortened steps or taking two steps to clear a single bag.
  • Starting Position: Linebackers assume a proper athletic stance, with knees slightly bent, back flat, head up, and eyes focused forward.

Drill Execution

  • High Knees Drill: On the coach’s command, linebackers explode forward, driving off the balls of their feet and lifting their knees high with each stride. They should maintain a controlled and balanced running form throughout the drill.

Variations

  • Ball on the Run: Introduce a football into the drill. The coach stands 8-10 yards behind the last step-over bag and throws the football to the linebacker at different points during the drill. Initially, throws can occur after clearing the final bag. As confidence and coordination improve, throws can be incorporated while the linebacker is still navigating the step-over bags, requiring them to catch the ball without breaking stride or losing focus on their footwork.
  • Lateral Movement: To challenge lateral movement skills, have linebackers shuffle sideways over the step-over bags, alternating between left and right foot leads. They should maintain a low center of gravity with bent knees, head held high, and shoulders back for optimal balance and agility.
  • Padded Blocking Simulation: For a more dynamic variation, introduce a padded blocking guard. Position one or even two coaches with a padded blocking guard at various points along the drill line, simulating an offensive lineman attempting to block the linebacker. The linebacker must react quickly, utilizing a forceful downward push with their hands to drive the blocking guard back to the ground.
  • Yoga Ball Challenge: Replace the padded blocking guard with a yoga ball. Roll the yoga ball at the linebacker’s feet as they navigate the step-over bags. This variation requires them to maintain focus on their footwork while reacting to the unpredictable movement of the ball.
  • Combined Challenge: For highly skilled linebackers, consider combining the padded blocking guard or yoga ball variation with throwing a football at the end of the drill. This injects a high level of complexity, requiring them to maintain agility, react to obstacles, and demonstrate hand-eye coordination by catching the football.

Coaching Points

  • Footwork Focus: Emphasize proper footwork throughout the drill. Linebackers should drive off the balls of their feet, land with a slight forward lean, and maintain a smooth, controlled running motion.
  • High Knee Action: Ensure linebackers lift their knees high enough with each stride to maximize the range of motion and flexibility benefits. However, avoid sacrificing proper running form by exaggerating the knee lift.
  • Head Up and Eyes Focused: Remind linebackers to keep their heads up and eyes scanning the field throughout the drill. Looking down at the step-over bags can hinder their ability to react to potential changes or obstacles.
  • Low Center of Gravity: Stress the importance of maintaining a low center of gravity, especially during lateral movements. This ensures better balance and quicker changes in direction.
  • Controlled Explosiveness: Encourage linebackers to move with a controlled explosiveness. They should generate power with each stride but maintain control to avoid losing balance or form.
