Backpedal and Weave: Mastering Lateral Movement
The Backpedal and Weave Drill is designed to enhance a defensive back’s ability to seamlessly transition between backpedaling and lateral movement, a crucial skill for maintaining coverage and reacting to route changes.
Purpose
- Lateral Quickness: Develops explosive lateral movement and change of direction, allowing defensive backs to mirror receivers’ routes effectively.
- Backpedal Proficiency: Reinforces proper backpedaling technique, including footwork, balance, and hip control.
- Coordination and Balance: Improves overall coordination and balance, enhancing a defensive back’s ability to maintain control while changing directions.
Description
Drill Setup
- Defensive Back lines up in his ready stance, between two lines five yards apart,
Drill Execution
- Upon coach’s command the defensive back starts backpedaling, and weaving towards one of the lines by pushing off of opposite foot from the desired direction and turning hips toward desired direction.
- When the defensive back reaches the line, he changes weaving direction, now weaving to the other line, and so on,
- Go for 20-30 yards, then return back to the line.
Variations
Instead of weaving between two lines, have the defensive backs react on visual cues:
- React on QB’s Eyes and Shoulders: the defensive back should weave towards the side where the QB is looking and directing his shoulders. This is a typical read reaction of safeties when playing zone.
- React on a Receiver: have a second defensive back line up as receiver, the backpedaling defensive back lines up accordingly for a man-to-man coverage. The receiver then jogs towards the defensive back trying to get farther outside or on the inside of the defensive back, the defensive back has keep his relative position by backpedaling and weaving accordingly. This is a typical read reaction of corner backs when playing man coverage.
Coaching Points
- Backpedal Technique: Emphasize proper backpedaling technique, including short, choppy steps, maintaining balance, and keeping the hips square.
- Lateral Movement: Encourage explosive lateral movement with a strong push from the inside foot when changing direction.
- Hip Rotation: Promote fluid hip rotation to facilitate quick changes of direction. Avoid excessive upper body movement.
- Eye Control: Stress the importance of maintaining focus on the simulated receiver or coach to anticipate their movements.
- Balance and Control: Emphasize maintaining balance and control throughout the drill, avoiding overexaggerated movements or loss of posture.
Equipment
- 2 5-yard lines or cones (for marking 2 lines 5 yards apart)
By mastering the Backpedal and Weave Drill, defensive backs will develop the lateral quickness, agility, and reaction time necessary to excel in man coverage or position themselves optimal to disrupt passing plays.
