Enhance Focus and Ball Handling: The “Globetrotter Drill” for Agile Wide Receivers

The “Globetrotter Drill” injects a fun and dynamic element into your wide receiver (WR) training regimen. Inspired by the iconic Harlem Globetrotters’ ball handling skills, this drill challenges WRs to focus on the ball, maintain quick reactions, and develop smooth hand-eye coordination.

Purpose

  • Develop Focus and Eye Tracking: The drill emphasizes keeping their eyes on the ball throughout the throwing sequence. This strengthens their ability to track the ball’s trajectory and adjust their hand placement for a secure catch.
  • Enhance Reaction Time: The constant back-and-forth throws challenge WRs to react instinctively and anticipate the ball’s return. This improves their reaction speed and prepares them to handle throws from different angles and velocities.
  • Refine Ball Handling: The drill integrates throwing and catching motions in a continuous flow. WRs practice catching the ball with proper technique and smoothly transitioning into a throwing motion, fostering smooth and efficient ball handling.

Description

  • Player and Coach Positioning: The coach stands approximately ten yards apart from the WRs, facing each other in a ready position.
  • Initiate the Throws: The coach initiates the drill by flipping the ball to a WR using a chest pass or underhand throw.
  • Catch and Throw Back: The WR catches the ball with proper technique, focusing on using their hands and forearms to secure the catch. They then immediately execute a similar throw back to the coach.
  • Behind the Back and Legs: As the drill progresses, the coach and WRs can incorporate variations by throwing the ball behind their backs or through their legs. This adds an element of fun and challenges hand-eye coordination further.
  • Gradual Speed Increase: The drill starts at a slow pace, allowing WRs to focus on proper mechanics. Gradually increase the throwing tempo as WRs demonstrate improvement, pushing them to react quickly and maintain control of the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Eyes on the Ball: Stress the importance of WRs keeping their eyes focused on the ball throughout the drill. This allows them to anticipate the throw’s direction and adjust their hands for a clean catch.
  • Proper Catching Technique: Remind WRs to use proper catching technique, focusing on catching the ball with their hands and forearms, not against their body.
  • Smooth Transitions: Encourage smooth transitions between catching and throwing the ball. This promotes efficient ball handling and quicker execution during game situations.
  • Fun and Engaging: Maintain a fun and engaging atmosphere during the drill. The playful nature of the “Globetrotter Drill” keeps WRs motivated and fosters a positive learning environment.
