Rollout Drills

The Escape Artist: Mastering Rollout Mechanics with Rollout Drills

Equipping your quarterbacks with polished rollout mechanics is crucial for success in modern passing offenses. The “Escape Artist” drill series hones their footwork, throwing mechanics, and decision-making for rollout plays, allowing them to extend plays and create opportunities downfield when the pocket collapses.

Purpose

  • Develop Efficient Rollout Footwork: This drill series refines the quarterback’s footwork for effective rollouts. Quarterbacks practice proper push-offs, arc creation, and controlled running technique to gain necessary depth and maintain mobility under pressure.
  • Enhance Throwing Mechanics on the Run: The drill emphasizes throwing mechanics while on the move. Quarterbacks practice maintaining a stable base, proper ball placement, and a smooth throwing motion for accurate throws even when rolling out.
  • Sharpen Decision-Making: Beyond mechanics, the drill encourages quarterbacks to think on their feet. They can practice identifying potential escape routes, reading the defense post-snap, and making quick decisions about throwing or scrambling.

Description

Drill Set-Up

  • Create the Pocket: Using the linemen-split marker or alternatively cones to mark the center and tackle positions, simulating the pocket.
  • Escape Zone: Place cones or towels approximately 6 yards behind the “tackle” cones, representing the target area for reaching the top of the rollout arc.

Drill Execution

Teaching Phase (Individual)
  • Pre-snap Stance: Quarterbacks assume their pre-snap stance behind the center cone.
  • Cadence and Snap Simulation: They initiate the drill with a short cadence (e.g., “Hut!”) to simulate the snap and trigger their rollout.
  • Rollout Drill:
    • Push-off and Arc: Explode off the line with a strong push-off from the appropriate foot (left foot for rolling right, right foot for rolling left). Aim to create an arc behind the “tackle” cone, reaching the escape zone marker within 5 controlled steps.
    • Downhill Running: After reaching the escape zone, transition to a controlled downhill run, maintaining good balance and staying within the pocket boundaries.
    • Upper Body Turn: As quarterbacks approach the line of scrimmage (LOS), emphasize a drill-specific upper body turn with the non-throwing shoulder pointing downfield (mimicking turning away from the receiver). However, hips should remain square towards the direction of the run to maintain mobility for potential throws.
  • Throwing Motion: Throughout the rollout, quarterbacks simulate a throwing motion without actually throwing the ball. This helps them feel the pocket boundaries and proper throwing position when nearing the LOS.
  • Continue Downfield: After the simulated throw, quarterbacks continue running approximately 5 yards across the LOS to complete the rollout.
Routine Drill (Group)
  • Quarterbacks line up 3-5 yards apart, simulating a huddle or shotgun formation.
  • One quarterback initiates the drill with a cadence, and all quarterbacks simultaneously perform the rollout (to the same side of course 😉 ).
  • Rotate the quarterback who initiates the cadence to promote focus and leadership skills.

Progressions

  • Vary Rollout Direction: Once comfortable rolling to one side, alternate practicing rollouts to the opposite side.
  • Introduce Simulated Pressure: Gradually incorporate simulated pressure drills to challenge quarterbacks to maintain mechanics and decision-making under duress.
  • Progression to Routes: Eventually, progress to incorporating routes run by receivers. This allows quarterbacks to practice timing their rollouts and simulated throws with the developing routes for a complete passing play simulation.

Coaching Points

  • Footwork Emphasis:
    • Highlight the importance of a strong initial push-off for gaining depth on the rollout.
    • Ensure controlled, efficient steps while maintaining a smooth arc during the rollout.
  • Throwing Mechanics:
    • Reinforce keeping the ball secure in front of the throwing armpit throughout the rollout.
    • Emphasize loose elbows for optimal arm swing mechanics when simulating the throw.
  • Upper Body Turn (Drill-Specific):
    • Explain that the drill-specific upper body turn is for practicing pocket awareness. In live situations, quarterbacks may have more flexibility in their upper body positioning based on the throw location.
  • Decision-Making Integration: As quarterbacks become comfortable with the mechanics, encourage them to consider potential throwing options or scrambling opportunities based on imaginary defensive pressure.

Equipment

  • Footballs (1 per quarterback)
  • Cones (4 per quarterback)
  • Linemen-split marker (optional)

By implementing the Rollout Drills and these coaching points, you can empower your quarterbacks to become adept at rollouts. Their refined footwork, improved throwing mechanics on the run, and sharpened decision-making will make them dangerous threats outside the pocket, extending plays and creating scoring opportunities for your offense.
