Description
Drill Setup
- Pair defensive backs into groups of two.
- Each pair stands approximately 5-7 yards apart, facing each other.
- One defensive back assumes the role of the ball carrier, while the other takes on the role of the tackler.
Drill Execution
Step 1: Mirror and Maintain Distance
- The ball carrier attempts to pass the tackler by utilizing various running techniques (e.g., cuts, jukes, changes of pace).
- The tackler’s primary objective is to mirror the ball carrier’s movements, maintaining a distance and proper defensive position.
- In this step neither player should make physical contact with the other player.
Step 2: Controlled Tackle
- The ball carrier gradually increases their speed and attempts to evade the tackler.
- The tackler focuses on executing a controlled form tackle, emphasizing proper form, wrapping up, and driving through the tackle.
Step 3: Live Tackling
- The ball carrier and tackler increase their intensity, simulating a live tackling situation.
- The focus is on making decisive tackles while maintaining proper technique.
Coaching Points
- Mirror and Maintain Distance: Emphasize staying connected to the ball carrier’s hips and maintaining a balanced stance.
- Tackling Technique: Reinforce proper tackling fundamentals, including eye placement, shoulder tackling, and driving through the tackle.
- Balance and Control: Stress the importance of maintaining balance throughout the drill to avoid missed tackles.
