Backpedal

Mastering the Backpedal: The Defensive Back Backpedal Drill

The Backpedal Drill is a fundamental exercise for developing proper backpedaling technique in defensive backs. This drill emphasizes footwork, balance, and body control, all of which are essential for success in coverage situations.

Purpose

  • Proper Footwork: Develops correct footwork mechanics, including short, choppy steps, and maintaining a narrow base.
  • Balance and Control: Improves balance and control while moving backward, allowing defensive backs to maintain optimal positioning and react quickly to changes in direction.
  • Hip and Shoulder Alignment: Ensures proper alignment of the hips and shoulders, which is crucial for maintaining coverage and making plays on the ball.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Defensive backs line up in a ready stance.

Drill Execution

  • On the coach’s command, defensive backs initiate a backpedal, moving backward while maintaining proper technique.
  • The focus is on consistent footwork, balance, and maintaining a ready position to transition into a forward movement or change of direction.

Progressions and Variations

While the basic backpedal drill focuses on fundamental technique, several progressions can be added to increase challenge and develop additional skills:

  • Backpedal to Shuffle: Transition from backpedaling to a lateral shuffle to improve lateral quickness and change of direction ability.
  • Backpedal to Break: Incorporate breaking drills to simulate reacting to a receiver’s release.
  • Backpedal with Ball Drills: Introduce drills that involve catching or deflecting a pass while backpedaling to develop hand-eye coordination and ball skills.

Coaching Points

  • Footwork: Emphasize short, choppy steps, keeping the feet close to the ground. Avoid crossing the feet or overextending the backpedal.
  • Balance: Maintain a low center of gravity and distribute weight evenly between the feet. This helps prevent falling backward and allows for quick reactions.
  • Hip and Shoulder Alignment: Ensure that the hips and shoulders remain square to the line of scrimmage. Avoid excessive rotation or leaning.
  • Head and Eye Placement: Keep the head up and eyes focused on the quarterback or receiver. This allows defensive backs to anticipate changes in the play and react accordingly.
