Pop-Up Dummy Parcours

The Gauntlet: Pop-Up Dummy Parcours for Polished Pass Rushers

The Pop-Up Dummy Parcours is a dynamic drill designed to refine various pass rush techniques in a challenging and engaging environment. This drill forces defensive linemen to string together a sequence of pass rush moves, simulating the demands of a live play where they may need to counter different blocking schemes or adjust their approach based on the offensive lineman’s movements. By utilizing pop-up dummies strategically placed in a designated area, linemen work on footwork, hip rotation, hand placement, and explosive movements throughout the drill. This drill requires five pop-up dummies, making it a convenient and effective addition to any defensive line training program.

Purpose

  • Technique Refinement: The primary objective of the drill is to provide linemen with the opportunity to practice and refine various pass rush techniques in a controlled yet dynamic setting. This could involve fundamental moves like the bull rush, rip technique, swim move, club/cross-chop technique, or even a combination of moves depending on the coach’s design.
  • Footwork and Hip Development: The pop-up dummy placement necessitates quick changes in direction and efficient footwork. This trains linemen to stay light on their feet, explode off the line of scrimmage, and maintain proper hip rotation throughout the drill.
  • Developing Violence: While technique is crucial, the drill also incorporates elements of violence (explosive power) to simulate the intensity of a real pass rushing situation. Linemen learn to generate power through their legs and core to effectively execute their pass rush moves and overpower the simulated blockers (pop-up dummies).

Description

Drill Setup

  • Parcours Design: Arrange the five pop-up dummies in a designated practice area, spaced approximately two to three yards apart. The coach can design a linear parcours with the dummies in a straight line, or create a more complex layout with lateral movements and changes in direction.
  • Starting Position: Defensive linemen line up in front of the first pop-up dummy, assuming a proper pass rush stance.

Drill Execution

  • On the Move: On the coach’s signal (clap, whistle, or verbal cue), the linemen explode off the line of scrimmage and attack the first pop-up dummy using a pre-designated pass rush technique (e.g., bull rush). They should maintain good body position, low center of gravity, and proper hand placement as they execute the move.
  • Transition and Technique Change: Upon reaching the first dummy, linemen quickly transition to the next dummy while maintaining momentum. The coach may designate a different pass rush technique for the second dummy (e.g., swim move), requiring linemen to adapt their approach on the fly.
  • Continuous Execution: The drill continues as linemen navigate the parcours, executing the designated pass rush technique at each pop-up dummy. They should focus on maintaining a quick pace, proper footwork, and explosive movements throughout the drill.
  • Finish Strong: The drill always concludes with an “off-arm strip” technique at the last pop-up dummy, simulating swatting the ball away from the quarterback after successfully defeating the block.

Coaching Points

  • Body Position: Stress the importance of maintaining good body position throughout the drill. This includes keeping a low center of gravity, staying square to the “blocker” (dummy), and maintaining leverage.
  • Technique Emphasis: During “technique” phases, remind linemen to focus on proper hand placement, controlled movements, and efficient execution of the designated pass rush move.
  • Explosive Power: In “violence” phases, encourage linemen to generate maximum power through their steps, hip rotation, and overall body movements.
  • Staying Connected: Emphasize the importance of staying close to the pop-up dummies as they execute their pass rush moves. This prevents the “blocker” from gaining separation and disrupting the rush.
  • Hips and Shoulders: Regardless of the specific pass rush move, ensure defensive linemen get their hips and shoulders square between the pop-up dummies. This allows them to maintain power and control throughout the drill.

Equipment

  • Five Pop-Up Dummies

The Pop-Up Dummy Parcours is a valuable tool for developing well-rounded pass rushers. By incorporating this drill into your training program, you equip defensive linemen with the skills they need to thrive in various game situations. They learn to effectively transition between different pass rush techniques, maintain proper footwork and hip mobility, and generate explosive power while maintaining good body position and technique. The Pop-Up Dummy Parcours is a challenging and engaging drill that keeps linemen motivated and helps them develop into disruptive forces on the defensive line.
