Building a Wall of Protection: Group Pass Protection Drills for Effective Blocking
Group Pass Protection Drills are a cornerstone for developing a cohesive and dominant offensive line. This drill series allows linemen to practice one-on-one pass blocking situations while incorporating essential elements of teamwork and communication.
Purpose
- Refining Pass Blocking Technique: This drill provides offensive linemen with dedicated opportunities to refine their individual pass blocking techniques. Through repetition and live blocking scenarios, linemen can work on proper footwork, hand placement, and body positioning to effectively block defenders and protect the quarterback.
- Developing Teamwork and Communication: While each lineman focuses on their individual block, the drill also emphasizes the importance of working together as a unit. Linemen can develop their communication skills and learn to react to different defensive alignments and pass rush styles.
- Building Confidence in Live Situations: By incorporating live reps with defenders rushing, the drill helps linemen gain confidence in their pass blocking abilities and prepare them for the pressure of game situations.
Description
Drill Setup
- Offensive Line Alignment: All five offensive linemen assume their proper stances in a pass protection alignment with appropriate splits based on the called play.
- Defender Positioning: A defender lines up directly across from each offensive lineman, simulating a one-on-one pass rush scenario.
Drill Execution
- One by one: On the coach’s call, one defender will rush the quarterback (represented by the stand-up dummy), while the corresponding offensive lineman attempts to block them effectively.
- The remaining four linemen will work on their pass sets and maintain their blocks on the stationary defenders across from them. This simulates maintaining gap integrity and preventing stunts or blitzes from collapsing the pocket.
- Rotation: After a designated time period or upon completion of the initial rush, the drill rotates. Each lineman gets the opportunity to perform a live rep with a defender rushing, allowing for focused practice and development.
- Defensive Alignment Variations: To further challenge the offensive line and simulate different game situations, the coach can implement variations in defensive alignments. This could involve different defensive schemes or blitzes that require adjustments from the offensive linemen.
Variations
- Quarterback Depth Simulation: Introduce the stand-up dummy (representing the quarterback) at varying depths to simulate different pass plays that require a 3-step drop, 5-step drop, or 7-step drop from the quarterback. This helps linemen adjust their sets and timing based on the specific play call.
- Competitive Timing: When using live defensive linemen, the drill can be made competitive by introducing a time limit. Define a specific timeframe during which the offensive lineman must keep the defender away from the quarterback dummy. Reaching the QB before the designated time signifies a win for the defense, while the offense wins if the defender is held off for the complete timeframe. This injects a competitive element and motivates linemen to push their technique and effort. The rep ends when the defender reaches the “QB” or when the defender did not reach the “QB” after the defined timeframe plus a reasonable time, i.e. 2-3 seconds,
Coaching Points
- Footwork Focus: Emphasize the importance of proper footwork during the pass set drills. Linemen should focus on quick, controlled steps that allow them to mirror the defender’s movements and maintain good balance.
- Body Positioning and Hand Placement: Stress the importance of proper body positioning and hand placement to create a wall between the defender and the quarterback. Linemen should keep their weight centered and utilize proper hand placement to control the defender’s rush.
- Communication and Teamwork: While each lineman focuses on their individual block, remind them to maintain communication with their teammates. This is crucial for recognizing potential blitzes or stunts and adjusting their blocks accordingly.
- Maintaining Gap Integrity: The drill should emphasize the importance of maintaining gap integrity. Even when not directly engaged with a rushing defender, linemen should remain in their assigned positions and prevent defenders from collapsing the pocket through stunts or blitzes.
Equipment
- Footballs (for Center, if working with live snap)
- Stand-Up Dummy (to represent the quarterback)
Group Pass Protection Drills are a valuable tool for building a strong and coordinated offensive line. By providing focused practice on individual technique, teamwork, and communication, this drill series helps linemen develop the skills and confidence necessary to protect the quarterback throughout the game.
