One Knee Drill

Building on the Basics: The One Knee Drill for Enhanced Hip Engagement and Warm-Up

The “One Knee Drill” is the next step in a well-structured quarterback warm-up routine. This drill builds upon the foundations established in the Two-Knees Drill by incorporating greater hip rotation and a slight change in body position, further preparing quarterbacks for the demands of on-field throwing.

Purpose

  • Progressive Warm-Up: Following the Two-Knees Drill, this drill introduces a slight variation in body position to gradually increase the intensity of the warm-up. The kneeling on one knee allows for more torso and hip rotation, mimicking the throwing motion more closely.
  • Enhanced Hip Engagement: By kneeling on their throwing side, quarterbacks are encouraged to initiate the throw with their hips, a crucial element of generating power and accuracy in throws. This drill helps to activate the hip muscles and build a stronger foundation for throwing mechanics.
  • Maintaining Mechanics: Similar to the Two-Knees Drill, this drill emphasizes proper throwing mechanics like torso rotation, arm extension, and follow-through. This focus on technique ensures quarterbacks develop good habits from the very beginning of their warm-up.

Description

  • Partner Up: Quarterbacks pair up and position themselves facing each other in a straight line, approximately 8-10 yards apart.
  • One-Knee Position: Unlike the Two-Knees Drill, quarterbacks assume a kneeling position with only one knee on the ground. They should kneel on their throwing hand side, mirroring a traditional throwing stance. This allows for greater hip rotation and a more dynamic throwing motion.
  • Target Acquisition: The “receiving” quarterback extends their arms upwards, palms facing forward, creating a clear target for the throwing quarterback to focus on.
  • Pre-Snap Mechanics: The throwing quarterback assumes a standard pre-snap position, holding the football with both hands in front of their chest (throwing hand side).
  • Throwing Motion: Initiating the throw, they begin by rotating their torso and hips towards the target. Remind them to focus on leading the throw with their hip rotation, a key element in generating power.
  • Mechanics and Follow-Through: As they rotate, they bring the ball up to their ear with their elbow high and pointed towards the target. From this position, they then extend their arm and release the ball in a smooth throwing motion. Emphasize a complete follow-through, with their throwing hand ending up loosely in front of their opposite hip.

Coaching Points

  • Controlled Throws: While this drill is part of the warm-up, emphasize the importance of focusing on proper technique and controlled throws over launching the ball with excessive force.
  • Maintain Focus on Target: Remind quarterbacks to maintain focus on their target throughout the entire throwing motion.
  • Hip Rotation – The Key Ingredient: Reiterate the importance of initiating the throw with hip rotation. This not only generates power but also helps with timing and accuracy.
  • Transition to Feet Parallel Drill: Once comfortable with the One-Knee Drill and demonstrating proper mechanics, quarterbacks can progress to the “Feet Parallel Drill” for the next stage of their warm-up routine. This drill incorporates a standing position, further preparing them for full-speed throws.

Equipment

  • Footballs (1 per pair of quarterbacks)

This drill is most effective when used as part of a sequenced warm-up routine. Following the Two Knees Drill, the One Knee Drill provides a natural progression that gradually increases the intensity of the warm-up and prepares quarterbacks for more complex throwing motions.

By incorporating the “One Knee Drill” and these valuable coaching points into your quarterback warm-up routine, you can ensure they develop proper mechanics, activate key muscle groups, and prepare their bodies for the demands of practice or game situations.
