Sprint Out Drill

Mastering the Sprint Out: The “Sprint Out Drill” for Enhanced Mechanics and Confidence

The “Sprint Out Drill” plays a vital role in sharpening your quarterbacks’ mechanics and decision-making for the ever-important sprint out pass. This drill isolates this specific play, allowing quarterbacks to refine their footwork, throwing motion, and overall execution.

Purpose

  • Mechanics for Success: This drill allows quarterbacks to focus on perfecting the throwing mechanics needed for an accurate and efficient sprint out pass. By practicing in a controlled environment, they can groove a smooth transition from the snap to the throwing motion while on the move.
  • Decision-Making Under Pressure: The sprint out simulates a situation where the quarterback needs to escape pressure and make a quick decision about throwing the ball. This drill helps them develop the ability to identify open receivers while on the run.
  • Confidence Building: Successfully completing accurate throws during the “Sprint Out Drill” builds confidence in quarterbacks’ abilities to execute this play in game situations. This confidence translates to decisive throws and potentially game-changing plays.

Description

  • Partner Up: Quarterbacks pair up, with one designated as the thrower and the other as the target receiver.
  • Pre-Snap Alignment: The throwing quarterback assumes their preferred pre-snap stance, either under center (with a center) or in shotgun formation behind the center.
  • Simulating the Snap: On the coach’s call, the quarterback simulates the snap (without a center) or takes the snap (with a center).
  • Sprint Out: Immediately after the simulated or actual snap, the quarterback sprints laterally (right or left, depending on the drill variation) towards a predetermined launch point. You can use cones or markings on the field to designate this launch point for consistent practice.
  • Throwing Motion: Upon reaching the launch point, the quarterback transitions smoothly into their throwing motion, focusing on proper mechanics and a quick release.
  • Target Acquisition: The receiving quarterback runs a designated route, typically a sideline route, to create a target for the throw.
  • Throw and Catch: The throwing quarterback completes a pass to the receiving quarterback, simulating a successful sprint out play.
  • Throwback Option (Optional): For an added layer of complexity, you can incorporate a throwback option into the drill. If the primary receiver is covered, the throwing quarterback can throw the ball back to a designated “hot route” receiver positioned behind the line of scrimmage.

Progression

  • Distance Variation: As quarterbacks become comfortable with the drill, gradually increase the distance they sprint out before throwing the ball.
  • Pass Rush Simulation: To add an element of pressure, introduce a coach or another player who simulates a pass rusher by rushing the throwing quarterback during the drill. This helps them practice throwing under pressure and reinforces the importance of a quick release.

Coaching Points

  • Footwork: Emphasize the importance of efficient footwork during the sprint out. The quarterback should take controlled, powerful steps to reach the launch point without losing balance or momentum.
  • Quick Release: A quick release is crucial for the success of the sprint out pass. Remind quarterbacks to focus on initiating their throwing motion as soon as they reach the launch point and prioritize a speedy release.
  • Body Positioning: Reiterate the importance of squaring their shoulders and hips towards the target at the beginning of the throwing motion, even while on the run. This ensures they generate power and maintain accuracy.
  • Decision-Making: Discuss the importance of identifying open receivers quickly while on the move. Encourage quarterbacks to scan the field and make a decisive throw to the best available option, incorporating the throwback option if necessary.

Equipment

  • Footballs (1 per pair of quarterbacks)
  • Optional: cones or Linemen split markers (for better launch point orientation)

By implementing the “Sprint Out Drill” with its progressions, you can equip your quarterbacks with the necessary skills to execute the sprint out pass effectively. This drill helps them develop a smooth throwing motion, efficient footwork, and confident decision-making for game-winning plays.
