Sharpen Focus Under Pressure: The “Firing Squad Drill” for Game-Ready Wide Receivers
The “Firing Squad Drill” is a dynamic tool for honing wide receivers’ (WRs) concentration, reaction time, and catching mechanics in a simulated game environment. This drill incorporates multiple quarterbacks (QBs) and a coach-designated “hot read” to challenge WRs to focus on the correct throw while maintaining proper catching technique under pressure. By emphasizing key coaching points and incorporating variations, the “Firing Squad Drill” equips WRs with the skills to excel in fast-paced game situations.
Purpose
- Enhance Concentration: WRs practice maintaining intense focus amidst distractions, simulating the pressure and competitive environment of a live game. This drill trains them to block out extraneous noise and concentrate solely on the coach’s signals and the QB’s throwing motion.
- Sharpen Reaction Time: The unpredictable nature of the drill, with only one designated QB throwing the ball, forces WRs to react quickly to identify the thrower and adjust their positioning for the catch.
- Refine Catching Mechanics: WRs refine their fundamental catching technique, focusing on catching the ball with their hands and securing it properly.
Description
Drill Setup
- WR Positioning: Position one WR at a time approximately five yards in front of a net (if using one) or a designated throwing area. WRs should stand facing the QBs, creating a realistic catching scenario.
- QB Positioning: Position the QBs about 15 yards in front of the receiver and about 5 yards apart
Drill Execution
- Ready, Set, Go!: The coach stands behind the WRs and initiates the drill by calling “Ready!” This prompts all QBs to assume a throwing stance, cocking their arms in preparation.
- Hot Read Designation: The coach then points to a specific QB, silently designating them as the “hot read” who will actually throw the ball. Throughout the drill, the coach should randomly pick which QB is designated as the “hot read” to keep the WRs guessing and focused.
- Throwing Motion and Catch: On the coach’s command of “GO!”, all QBs begin their throwing motions simultaneously. However, only the designated QB throws the ball towards the WR. The WR must quickly identify the throwing QB, adjust their positioning if necessary, and focus on catching the ball with their hands.
- Secure, Tuck, and Throw Back: Upon catching the ball, the WR should immediately tuck it away “high and tight” to their chest to ensure ball security. Following a brief pause to simulate securing the catch, the WR throws the ball back to the designated QB who threw it.
- Repeat and Rotate: The drill repeats for each receiver about 6 times, then continues with the next WR in line.
Variations
- Sideways Stance: To increase the difficulty and simulate game situations where WRs might not be facing the QB directly, have WRs stand sideways instead of facing the QBs at the start of the drill.
- Arm Action: Incorporate a variation where WRs begin with their arms down by their sides instead of already in a catching position. This challenges their reaction time and ability to quickly transition into a catching motion.
- Tuck and Turn: For a more advanced variation, have WRs not only tuck the ball away but also perform a move as if turning upfield after the catch. This simulates the transition from catching the ball to initiating a run route.
Coaching Points
- Maintain Focus: Emphasize the importance of maintaining laser focus throughout the drill. WRs should block out any distractions from the other QBs’ motions and concentrate solely on the designated “hot read” and the ball’s trajectory.
- Eyes on the Ball: Stress the importance of keeping their eyes focused on the ball throughout the entire catching motion. This ensures they track the ball’s path and adjust their hands for a secure catch.
- Quick Reaction Time: Encourage WRs to react quickly to identify the throwing QB and adjust their positioning accordingly. Hesitation can lead to missed catches in a game situation.
- Proper Catching Technique: Remind WRs to focus on fundamental catching mechanics, creating a large target with their hands, extending their fingers towards the ball, and bringing the ball securely into their body after the catch.
- Secure the Catch: Emphasize the importance of securing the catch with both hands before attempting to throw the ball back to the QB. A secure catch is crucial to avoid fumbles and turnovers.
- “High and Tight” Tuck: Instruct WRs to practice the proper “high and tight” tucking technique, bringing the ball close to their chest with their elbows tucked in for optimal ball security.
Equipment
- 4 Footballs
- 4 Quarterbacks / Throwers
- Optional: Net (e.g., a soccer goal with net or similar structure) – This helps contain any errant throws and allows for quicker ball retrieval.
The “Firing Squad Drill” is a valuable tool for developing well-rounded WRs who can excel in pressure situations. By incorporating this drill and its variations, coaches can equip their WRs with the focus, reaction time, and catching mechanics needed to make crucial catches and contribute significantly to the team’s success. WRs emerge from this drill ready to handle game-like distractions, identify the open receiver quickly, and execute secure catches amidst the competitive chaos of a live game.
