Blurr Drills

Sharpen Focus Under Pressure: The “Blurr Drills” Variations for Concentrated Wide Receivers

The “Blurr Drill” is a dynamic tool for honing wide receivers’ (WRs) concentration and focus on catching the ball amidst distractions. This drill utilizes variations with players waving their arms to create a visual obstacle, simulating the chaos and movement present in game situations. By incorporating key coaching points and emphasizing focus, the “Blurr Drill” equips WRs with the mental toughness and concentration needed to make crucial catches in any situation.

Purpose

  • Enhance Concentration: The drill challenges WRs to maintain laser focus on the ball and catching mechanics despite visual distractions. This simulates the competitive environment of a live game where defenders might try to disrupt their concentration.
  • Develop Mental Toughness: By overcoming distractions and maintaining focus throughout the drill, WRs build mental toughness, a crucial trait for success at the receiver position.
  • Refine Catching Technique: The drill allows WRs to practice catching the ball with proper technique even with distractions, ensuring they can secure receptions efficiently.

Description

Standing

Variation 1: Standing Focus (2 Players)

Drill Setup
  • WR and Distraction Player Positioning: Position the first WR with their back towards the net, facing the coach/QB. Position a second player (distraction player) to one side of the WR, standing sideways and facing the coach.
Drill Execution
  • Throw and Catch with Distraction: The coach/QB initiates the drill by throwing the ball towards the WR’s back. While the ball is in the air, the distraction player vigorously waves their arms in front of the WR’s face, attempting to disrupt their focus without touching the ball.
  • Maintain Focus and Catch: The WR must maintain focus on the ball’s trajectory despite the distraction. They should turn their head and body to locate the ball, extend their hands, and make a clean catch.

Running

Drill Setup
  • WR and Distraction Player Positioning: Line up one or two WRs eight yards in front of the net, facing each other with approximately three to four feet of space between them. Position another player (distraction player) behind the WRs, also facing the net.
Drill Execution
  • Throw Between Distraction and Catch: The coach/QB throws the ball between the two WRs facing each other. While the ball is in the air, the distraction player behind them vigorously waves their arms, attempting to disrupt the WRs’ focus without touching the ball.
  • Running Catch with Focus: The WRs jog at ¾ speed towards the net, simulating game movement. Despite the distraction, they must maintain focus on the ball’s trajectory. Once they see the ball approaching, they should extend their hands and make a clean catch in the space between the two players facing each other.

Coaching Points

  • Maintain Focus: Emphasize the importance of maintaining unwavering focus on the ball throughout the drill, regardless of the distractions. Remind WRs to track the ball’s trajectory with their eyes and not get fooled by the arm movements.
  • Head and Eye Movement: Instruct WRs to turn their head and eyes quickly to locate the ball once it is thrown. This allows them to adjust their body positioning and hands for the catch.
  • Catch with Hands: Stress the importance of catching the ball with their hands, not their body. Remind them to create a large target with their fingers extended and bring the ball securely into their chest after the catch.
  • Maintain Technique: Emphasize the importance of maintaining proper catching mechanics throughout the drill, even with distractions present. This ensures they can consistently secure catches in game situations.

Equipment

  • Footballs
  • Net (e.g., a soccer goal with net or similar structure)
  • Quarterback (QB) or Coach (for throwing the ball)

The “Blurr Drills” with their variations are a valuable tool for developing well-rounded WRs who can excel under pressure. By incorporating these drills into their practice routine, WRs can refine their focus, catching technique, and mental toughness, ultimately leading to more consistent success on the field. WRs emerge from this drill with the confidence to maintain focus amidst distractions, track the ball effectively, and make crucial catches that contribute significantly to the team’s offensive success.
