Mastering the Fold: The Footwork Drill for Dynamic Second-Level Fold Blockers
The Fold Block Footwork Drill is another essential addition to our series focusing on footwork mechanics for various offensive line (OL) blocking techniques. This drill hones the crucial first steps and body positioning necessary for the “second-level blocker” in a fold block scheme. In outside zone runs and other run blocking plays, the second-level blocker, typically a tight end or tackle, plays a vital role by sealing off linebackers after the initial block by the offensive lineman. By incorporating key coaching points, variations, and a clear progression, this drill equips second-level blockers with the explosive footwork, body control, and powerful movements needed to execute the fold block effectively and dominate their assignments at the second level.
Purpose
- Develop Fold Block Footwork: The drill isolates and refines the initial steps and body positioning required for the second-level blocker in a fold block. Linemen practice a short drop step with proper body positioning followed by a forceful kick-through step to gain leverage and quickly reach their blocking assignment at the second level.
- Explosive Movements and Body Control: The drill emphasizes the importance of generating power through the legs and core to propel linemen out of their stance with an explosive first step. Additionally, it reinforces proper body positioning and footwork mechanics for navigating the fold block sequence with efficiency and control.
- Efficient Reach to Second Level: By mastering the fold block footwork, linemen can efficiently reach linebackers at the second level before they can react and disrupt the play. This creates running lanes for the ball carrier and ensures the offensive scheme progresses smoothly.
Description
Drill Setup
- Ready Position: Instruct linemen to assume a relaxed “ready position” several yards behind the line of scrimmage, as outlined in the Offensive Line Stance Drill.
- Fold Block Scenario: Explain the specific scenario of the fold block, where the lineman will be the second-level blocker following the initial block by another offensive lineman. This helps linemen visualize their role and target area in the blocking scheme.
Drill Execution
- Snap into Stance: On the coach’s whistle or verbal command (e.g., “Set!” or “Hut!”), linemen must explosively snap into their three-point stance.
- Footwork Focus: Following the snap into stance, linemen focus on their fold block footwork. On the coach’s cadence (e.g., “Hut-Hut”), they explode out of their stance and freeze after their first step. This allows them to isolate and perfect the initial drop step crucial for initiating the fold block.
Progression
- Gradual Refinement: Once linemen demonstrate consistent success with the first-step freeze, the coach can progress the drill. The next step involves working on both the first step (drop step) and the second step (kick-through), focusing on proper body positioning and generating power through the kick.
- Full Sequence Simulation (Optional): As linemen become comfortable with the initial steps, coaches can introduce a full sequence simulation. This variation involves incorporating a designated “defender” with hand shield or target area representing the linebacker at the second level. Linemen can then practice the complete fold block sequence, including the drop step, kick-through, and final steps to reach and engage the defender.
Coaching Points
- Drop Step: Emphasize a short, controlled drop step (approximately 6-7 inches) backwards and laterally towards the target defender. This step should maintain a low pad level and keep the shoulders square to the line of scrimmage.
- Maintain Body Position: Stress the importance of staying low with “chest on thigh” posture throughout the drop step. This ensures linemen can maintain leverage and control as they transition to the next step.
- Head Up: Remind linemen to keep their heads up with eyes focused on the target defender, maintaining awareness of their surroundings.
- Kick-Through: Following the drop step, emphasize a powerful “kick-through” with the other foot to propel the lineman upfield towards the defender. This generates momentum and allows them to quickly reach their blocking assignment.
- Stay Low: Throughout the entire fold block sequence, emphasize the importance of staying low with “chest still over thigh.” This ensures linemen can maintain power and leverage throughout the block.
Equipment
- None Required (Initially)
- (Optional) Hand Shield (for optional defender)
The Fold Block Footwork Drill is a valuable tool for developing dynamic and effective second-level blockers in fold block schemes. By incorporating this drill into their practice routine, linemen can refine their fold block footwork, master the techniques for efficient second-level reach, and develop the explosive movements and body control necessary to dominate their assignments and create running lanes for the offense. As linemen progress through the series of footwork drills, they will develop a comprehensive skillset to excel in various blocking techniques and become a reliable force on the offensive line.
