Mastering Mirror Movement: The Offensive Line Mirror Dodge Drill

The Mirror Dodge Drill is a cornerstone for developing agile and technically sound offensive linemen. This drill hones essential footwork, body positioning, and handwork techniques, all while simulating the lateral movements and counter moves encountered during live pass protection situations.

Purpose

  • Refined Body Mechanics: The drill emphasizes proper body position, footwork, and base technique for offensive linemen in their two-point stance. This translates to better leverage, stability, and overall protection mechanics throughout the drill.
  • Developing Mirror Movement: Linemen practice mirroring the defender’s lateral movements, staying square to the line of scrimmage (LOS), and maintaining proper hand placement for effective control. This mirroring skill is crucial for staying with defenders and disrupting their pass rush attempts.
  • Incorporating Hand Techniques: The drill allows for the incorporation of various hand techniques such as stabs and punches. Linemen practice using these techniques to create separation, gain leverage, and execute counter moves against the defender’s rush.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Offensive Lineman Alignment: Offensive linemen line up in single file, each maintaining at least 6 yards of separation from the lineman in front of them.
  • Lateral Movement Zone: Mark a designated area approximately 4-5 yards wide using two cones. This area defines the zone within which the defender will perform lateral movements.
  • “Defender” Preparation: The lineman at the back of each line rotates to the front, grabbing a hand shield to simulate a defensive lineman.
  • Offensive Lineman Stance: Each lineman assumes their ideal pass protection stance:
    • Wide Base: Establishing a wide base with proper “post/power” foot positioning ensures stability and leverage.
    • 3 Power Producing Angles: Focus on maintaining the three key angles for power generation: ankles, knees, and hips.
    • Posture and Balance: Emphasize proper posture with even weight distribution for optimal balance and efficient movement.
    • Square to LOS: Hips and shoulders should be square to the line of scrimmage, allowing for better redirection against defender’s movements.
    • Hand Placement: Hands should be held high (throat level) with thumbs together and elbows bent at a 45-degree angle for optimal hand protection and control.

Drill Execution

  • On Coach’s Command: On the coach’s signal, the “defender” with the hand shield begins moving rapidly left and right within the designated zone. Their goal is to challenge the offensive lineman’s movement and force them to react while maintaining proper pass protection posture.
  • Mirror Movement and Technique: The offensive lineman mirrors the defender’s lateral movements, keeping their feet quick and maintaining proper body position throughout the drill. They can incorporate hand techniques like stabs or punches as opportunities arise to create separation or gain leverage.
  • Maintaining Form: The key element for the offensive lineman is to maintain all the proper body and handwork techniques emphasized throughout the drill. This reinforces proper mechanics and muscle memory for live situations.
  • Drill Completion: Once the coach signals the end of the drill, the offensive lineman yells “COVER” and sprints 10 yards downfield. They then jog back to the end of their line to repeat the drill with the next lineman taking the “defender” role.

Coaching points

  • Post/Power Footwork: Continuously emphasize proper post/power foot positioning and efficient, low-profile footwork that allows the lineman to stay mobile and balanced.
  • Body Posture and Leverage: Remind linemen to maintain proper body posture (3 power angles) and even weight distribution for optimal leverage and power generation against the defender.
  • Squaring Up: Stress the importance of staying square to the line of scrimmage throughout the drill. This allows for better reaction time and improved ability to redirect the defender’s rush.
  • Hand Technique Mechanics: Focus on proper mechanics for hand techniques like stabs and punches. Ensure linemen understand the timing and application of these techniques to achieve separation and control.
  • Continuous Coaching: Provide continuous coaching feedback throughout the drill, correcting any technical errors and reinforcing proper mechanics.

Equipment

  • Cones (2 per line of offensive linemen)
  • Hand Shields (1 per line of offensive linemen)

The Mirror Dodge Drill is a valuable tool for developing well-rounded offensive linemen. By incorporating this drill into their training regimen, linemen can refine their footwork, body positioning, and handwork techniques. This translates to improved performance in live situations, allowing them to effectively mirror defenders’ movements, maintain leverage, and ultimately neutralize defenders during passing plays. The drill’s emphasis on mirroring, handwork, and maintaining proper form prepares linemen for the dynamic challenges they face on the field.
