Shuffle with Yoga Ball

Mastering Footwork and Low Pad Level: The Shuffle with Yoga Ball Drill

The Shuffle with Yoga Ball Drill is another valuable addition to your defensive line agility drill series. This drill combines controlled lateral movements with proper pad level maintenance, challenging linemen to stay low and agile while reacting to a simulated low block. By incorporating a yoga ball toss, the drill adds a layer of hand-eye coordination and reaction training.

Purpose

  • Footwork and Agility: The drill emphasizes developing quick and efficient footwork during lateral movements. This translates to improved ability to shuffle laterally and react quickly to offensive plays that involve screens or misdirection.
  • Maintaining Low Pad Level: Throughout the drill, linemen maintain a proper low pad level, simulating proper stance technique in live situations. This ensures they stay explosive and powerful while reacting to potential blocks.
  • Low Block Reaction and Hand Technique: The introduction of the medicine ball simulates a low block attempt. Linemen practice using proper hand technique to “defeat” the block and protect their lower body.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Defensive Line Stance: Each defensive lineman aligns in a single file formation, assuming a proper stance with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and back flat.
  • Obstacle Course: Set up a line of cones or low step-over bags or low hurdles spaced 3-4 yards apart, simulating offensive linemen. This will serve as the “obstacle course” for the linemen to shuffle over.
  • Coach Positioning: The coach stands at the end of the obstacle course, holding the yoga ball.

Drill Execution

  • Lateral Shuffles: On the coach’s signal, the first lineman in line begins shuffling laterally towards the obstacle course, maintaining a low pad level and keeping their eyes focused forward. They should lead with their outside foot (away from the cones) on each shuffle to maintain proper body positioning.
  • Low Block Simulation: As the lineman approaches the last cone/hurdle, the coach throws the yoga ball towards the lineman’s feet, simulating a low block attempt.
  • Hand Technique Reaction: The lineman reacts to the medicine ball by using proper hand technique to “defeat” the block. This typically involves a quick downward chopping motion with both hands to redirect the medicine ball away from their legs.
  • Drill Completion: After successfully navigating the obstacle course and reacting to the medicine ball, the lineman sprints past the coach for 5-10 yards (simulating pursuit) before jogging back to the end of the line. The next lineman then repeats the drill.

Coaching Points

  • Low Pad Level Focus: Continuously emphasize the importance of maintaining a low pad level throughout the drill, even during lateral movements. Remind linemen to keep their knees bent and hips low.
  • Quick and Efficient Footwork: Stress the importance of quick and efficient footwork during the shuffles. Linemen should focus on short, choppy steps to maintain balance and agility.
  • Eyes Up and Aware: While maintaining a low pad level, coach linemen to keep their eyes focused forward, scanning their surroundings and staying aware of the upcoming obstacle course and potential medicine ball throw.
  • Proper Hand Technique: Ensure linemen understand and utilize proper hand technique when reacting to the yoga ball. The chop motion should be powerful and controlled, effectively redirecting the ball away from their legs.
  • Progression with Speed: As linemen master the basic drill, gradually increase the speed of the shuffles and the yoga ball throws to further challenge their agility and reaction time.

Equipment

  • Yoga Ball
  • Cones or Low Step-Over bags or Low Hurdles (4-6, depending on drill length)

The Shuffle with Yoga Ball Drill is an effective tool for developing a combination of essential skills for defensive linemen. By incorporating this drill into their training regimen, linemen can improve their footwork, maintain proper pad level during lateral movements, and react effectively to low block attempts, ultimately becoming a more disruptive force on the field.
