Block Recognition Drills

Sharpen Your Vision: Block Recognition Drills for Smarter and More Reactive Defensive Linemen

Block Recognition Drills are a cornerstone for developing elite defensive linemen. These drills train linemen to decipher the offensive line’s blocking scheme quickly and efficiently. By understanding the type of block being executed (run block, pass block) and reacting accordingly, linemen gain a significant advantage at the line of scrimmage, disrupting plays and pressuring the quarterback. This drill series utilizes a “Big Ball” and various offensive player simulations to create realistic blocking scenarios, allowing linemen to hone their recognition skills in a controlled environment.

Purpose

  • Mastering Block Recognition: The core objective is to train defensive linemen to recognize different blocking schemes employed by the offensive line. This includes identifying run block variations (down block, reach block, double team), pass sets, and combo blocks.
  • Refining Reaction Time: The drill emphasizes developing quick and decisive reactions based on the identified block. Linemen learn to counter different blocking techniques effectively, minimizing their impact and disrupting the offensive play.
  • Building Technique and Confidence: Through repetition and focused coaching, linemen refine their proper hand placement, footwork, and body positioning to effectively fight through and escape blocks. Successful completion builds confidence in their ability to read offensive schemes and react decisively.

Description

2-Spot Drill (Multiple Variations)

  • Players: 2-3 offensive players and 1 defensive lineman (adjust based on the simulated block).
  • Setup: The coach verbally communicates the blocking scheme to the offensive players. They line up in the designated formation, ready to execute the block. The defensive lineman positions themself based on their defensive alignment.
  • Execution: On the coach’s cue, the offensive players execute the designated block (down block, reach block, double team, etc.). The defensive lineman focuses on reading the block type and reacts accordingly. This may involve a swim move to shed a down block, a chop to defeat a reach block, or proper positioning and hand placement to handle a double team.
  • Key Point: All variations of the 2-Spot Drill emphasize finishing with an escape move, demonstrating the lineman’s ability to break free from the block and pursue the play.

Big Ball Double Team

  • Players: Defensive lineman and 1 designated offensive player.
  • Setup: The Big Ball acts as the “post player” in a double team scenario. The offensive player simulates the “drive block” by placing their hands on the defensive lineman’s hips.
  • Execution: The coach rolls the Big Ball towards the defender, mimicking the pressure of a double team. The defender focuses on using proper hip technique to battle the “drive block” until they feel the offensive player (hands on hips) release from the block.
  • Counter and Escape: Once the defender feels the release, they utilize proper hand placement and leverage to work around the Big Ball, simulating shedding the block. The drill concludes with a designated escape move, showcasing the lineman’s ability to transition from the block to pursuing the play.

Big Ball Power Scoop

  • Players: Defensive lineman.
  • Setup: The Big Ball is positioned to simulate a backside cut block scenario.
  • Execution: The defensive lineman practices proper technique to collide with the Big Ball, mimicking defeating the cut block. The drill then transitions to working down the line, simulating pursuit of the running back.
  • Key Point: This drill emphasizes proper footwork and pad level to effectively defeat the cut block and pursue the play laterally.

Big Arm Slide the Hip

  • Players: Defensive lineman.
  • Setup: The Big Arm attachment is used to simulate a reach block or zone blocking scheme. The coach positions the Big Arm to initially place the defensive lineman in a “defeated” position.
  • Execution: The defensive lineman practices proper technique to fight back to their assigned gap responsibility. This may involve hand placement to control the Big Arm and footwork to maintain leverage.
  • Key Point: The drill emphasizes the importance of not getting overwhelmed by the initial block (reach or zone) and using proper technique to regain proper positioning and gap responsibility. The drill concludes with an escape move, demonstrating the transition to pursuing the play.

Coaching Points

  • No Cheating: Stress the importance of the defensive lineman staying square and not “cheating” by peeking or shifting their weight before the block is initiated. This replicates a game-like situation where they must react based on the offensive lineman’s movement.
  • Body Position and Technique: Continuously emphasize the importance of good body position and proper technique throughout the Block Recognition Drills. This includes:
    • Low Center of Gravity: Remind linemen to maintain a low center of gravity throughout the drill. This allows for better leverage, power, and quicker reactions to different blocks.
    • Pad Level: Stress keeping their pads low and square throughout the drill. This prevents the offensive lineman from getting underneath and driving them back.
    • Hand Placement: Coach proper hand placement for different blocking scenarios. This may involve strong hand placement inside the blocker’s chest for run blocks or using hands to swat and redirect for pass sets.
    • Footwork: Emphasize the importance of quick and active footwork. Choppy steps with good footwork allow linemen to stay mobile, react quickly to changes in the block, and maintain leverage.
  • Film Review: Incorporate film review sessions into the training regimen. Show linemen game footage of themselves and other players, highlighting successful block recognition and reaction techniques. This visual reinforcement helps solidify their understanding of the drills and how they translate to live game situations.

Equipment

  • Big Ball

Block Recognition Drills are an invaluable tool for developing well-rounded defensive linemen. By honing their ability to read blocking schemes, react decisively, and execute proper technique, linemen become a disruptive force on the field. This translates to more tackles for loss, pressures on the quarterback, and ultimately, a more dominant defensive unit.
