Square Drills

Master the Box: Square Drills for Agile and Technically Sound Linebackers

Square Drills are a fundamental exercise designed to refine a linebacker’s footwork in various situations they encounter on the field. This drill incorporates a series of directional changes and backpedal movements, allowing linebackers to practice proper technique for zone drops, pursuit angles, and maintaining a strong base throughout the movement.

Purpose

  • Enhanced Footwork: Square Drills emphasize proper footwork and efficient changes of direction. Linebackers develop the footwork necessary to seamlessly transition between backward drops, forward bursts, and lateral movements.
  • Technical Refinement: The drill focuses on maintaining proper body alignment and technique during various movements. This includes keeping knees bent, back flat, chest over knees, and head up throughout the drill.
  • Versatility for Different Situations: The drill incorporates elements of zone coverage drops, pursuit angles, and backpedaling, preparing linebackers for a variety of situations they might encounter during a game.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Set up a Square: Using the cones, create a square on the field approximately 6 yards by 6 yards.
  • Starting Position: Linebackers stand facing away from the square at one of the cones.

Drill Execution

  • Zone Drop: On the coach’s signal, the linebacker backpedals towards the next cone in a straight line, simulating a zone drop or man drop back in coverage. Maintain proper backpedal technique with knees bent, heels off the ground, and eyes focused on the coach.
  • 45-Degree Cut: Upon reaching the next cone, the linebacker explosively changes direction by cutting at a 45-degree angle towards the following cone. This simulates a change in direction while pursuing a running back or reacting to a play developing to the side.
  • Straight Backpedal: Reaching the third cone, the linebacker seamlessly transitions into a straight backpedal, retreating back to the final cone. Maintain proper backpedal mechanics with a low center of gravity and eyes focused on the coach or the area they are covering.
  • Return to Start: From the final cone, the linebacker sprints back to the starting cone, completing the square pattern. This emphasizes quick transitions and explosiveness.

Variations

  • Ball Interception: During the drill, the coach can introduce a football for interception practice. As the linebacker completes the square and returns to the starting cone, the coach can throw a pass at them, simulating an interception opportunity during a play.
  • Change of Direction Sequence: To target specific situations, the coach can modify the sequence of directional changes within the square. For instance, the drill can begin with a 45-degree drop followed by a straight forward run, simulating a pursuit scenario.
  • Shuffle Integration: For a more challenging variation, incorporate shuffle movements into the drill. Instead of running straight forward from the second cone, linebackers can perform a shuffle laterally before sprinting forward 45-degree. And shuffle from there back to the starting cone. This variation tests their agility and ability to change direction while maintaining a low center of gravity.

Coaching Points

  • Footwork Focus: Emphasize proper footwork throughout the drill. Linebackers should take short, choppy steps during backpedals and explosive, controlled steps while changing directions. Avoid crossing their feet or taking overly long strides.
  • Technical Precision: Stress the importance of maintaining proper body alignment. Linebackers should keep their knees bent, back flat, chest over knees, and head up with eyes focused on the coach or the relevant area of the field.
  • Controlled Explosiveness: Encourage linebackers to move with a controlled explosiveness. They should generate power with each step but maintain control to avoid losing balance or form.
  • Head Movement: Remind linebackers to keep their heads moving throughout the drill. They should scan from the coach (for signals and ball throws) to the rest of the field to maintain awareness of their surroundings.
  • Technique Over Speed: Reiterate that this is a technique drill, not a conditioning drill. Focus on proper form and execution over raw speed. Once they master the drill with proper technique, gradually increase the speed of execution.

Equipment
