Diamond Break Drill

Developing Coverage Instincts: The Linebacker Diamond Break Drill

The Linebacker Diamond Break Drill is designed to refine a linebacker’s ability to quickly transition from a pass-rushing stance to coverage, read the quarterback’s eyes and throwing motion, and break on the ball for an interception. This drill emphasizes proper footwork, hip fluidity, and ball-tracking skills, all essential components of a successful coverage linebacker.

Purpose

  • Hip Opening and Pass Drop: The drill focuses on developing the linebacker’s ability to quickly open their hips and establish a proper drop into coverage. This includes maintaining balance, fluidity, and square shoulders throughout the movement.
  • Reading the Quarterback: Linebackers learn to read the quarterback’s eyes and throwing motion to anticipate the pass and break in the correct direction. This develops their ability to process information rapidly and make split-second decisions.
  • Ball-Tracking and Interception: The drill emphasizes the importance of tracking the ball throughout the flight path and securing the interception with proper technique. Linebackers develop the hand-eye coordination and ball-tracking skills necessary to make plays on the ball.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Cone Placement: Arrange four cones to form a diamond shape. Place one cone 20 yards deep as the primary coverage target. Position two additional cones eight yards deep and twelve yards wide on either side of the primary target cone. Place the fourth cone four yards deep in the middle of the diamond.
  • Linebacker Positioning: The linebacker starts in a two-point stance at the center cone (four yards deep).

Drill Execution

  • Coach’s Signal: The coach indicates the target area by pointing towards one of the two outside cones (eight yards deep).
  • Pass Drop: The linebacker quickly opens their hips and drops to the designated target cone, maintaining square shoulders throughout the movement.
  • Ball Placement: Once the linebacker reaches the target cone, the coach simulates a quarterback throwing the ball to one side or the other. The coach can vary the difficulty by throwing the ball in different locations within the passing window.
  • Interception and Return: The linebacker reacts to the simulated pass, tracking the ball and intercepting it with proper technique. After securing the interception, they tuck the ball away and sprints past the coach, simulating a return.

Variations and Progressions

  • Increased Difficulty: As linebackers become proficient in the basic drill, increase the difficulty by introducing variations in the coach’s throwing motion (quick releases, delayed throws, different arm angles). This forces linebackers to adapt to different passing styles and improve their reaction time.
  • Multiple Receivers: To simulate more complex coverage scenarios, add additional cones or players to represent potential receivers. This challenges linebackers to read the quarterback’s progression and make decisions based on multiple options.

By incorporating these variations and progressions, the Linebacker Diamond Break Drill becomes a valuable tool for developing well-rounded coverage linebackers. As linebackers master the fundamentals of hip opening, ball-tracking, and interception technique, they become more confident and instinctive in their coverage responsibilities.

Coaching Points

  • Hip Opening: Emphasize the importance of quickly and fluidly opening the hips while maintaining balance and square shoulders. This allows linebackers to change direction efficiently and gain depth into their coverage drop.
  • Eye Discipline: Stress the importance of maintaining focus on the quarterback’s eyes and throwing motion. Linebackers should anticipate the pass based on the quarterback’s cues and break in the correct direction.
  • Ball Tracking: Encourage linebackers to keep their eyes on the ball throughout the flight path. Proper tracking allows them to adjust their position and secure the interception with confidence.
  • Interception Technique: Reinforce proper interception technique, including using the hands to secure the ball and tucking it away for protection.
  • Sprint and Ball Security: After securing the interception, emphasize the importance of a strong sprint to gain yards and protect the ball. Linebackers should focus on maintaining ball security and avoiding fumbles.

Equipment

  • 4 Cones
  • Footballs

The Linebacker Diamond Break Drill is essential for developing linebackers with exceptional coverage skills. This drill hones their ability to quickly transition from a pass-rushing stance to coverage, read the quarterback’s intentions, and make plays on the ball. By emphasizing proper technique, anticipation, and ball-tracking, the Linebacker Diamond Break Drill equips linebackers with the tools to become playmakers in the passing game. As linebackers master this drill, they become more confident and instinctive in their coverage responsibilities, ultimately leading to improved pass defense.
