Mastering the Deep Ball: The Bomb Interception Drill
The Bomb Interception Drill is designed to refine a defensive back’s ability to play deep routes, maintain proper positioning, and make interceptions on deep passes. This drill emphasizes footwork, reaction time, and ball-tracking skills.
Purpose
- Deep Coverage: Develops the ability to maintain proper depth and positioning when defending deep routes.
- Ball-Hawking Instincts: Enhances the defensive back’s ability to track deep passes and make plays on the ball.
- Interception Technique: Refines the technique for intercepting deep passes, including timing, hand placement, and ball security.
Description
Drill Setup
- Defensive backs line up approximately 5 yards deep from the line of scrimmage on or outside the numbers.
- A coach or designated passer stands approximately in the middle of the field.
Drill Execution
- Initial Stance: Defensive backs assume a ready stance, facing the passer.
- Backpedal and Break: On the coach’s command, defensive backs initiate a backpedal, followed by a weave movement to the outside for about 5-10 yards before turning into a full sprint run.
- Deep Pass: The coach throws a deep pass, targeting an area beyond the defensive back.
- Interception Attempt: The defensive back drives towards the ball, aiming to intercept the pass at its highest point.
- Ball Security: After securing the interception, defensive backs practice securing the ball and protecting it from potential fumbles.
- Break, Turn and Return: After intercepting the football the defensive back breaks, turns around and returns the ball sprinting back to the line-of-scrimmage.
Variation
- SCoR instead of backpedal, weave: Instead of Backpedal, Weave, Sprint, have the defensive backs use the SCoR (Shuffle, Cross-Over, Run) technique:
- Line up in a 45° to 90° inward facing stance
- Start with 2-3 quick shuffle steps
- Transition to a cross-over run for 4-5 strides
- Transition to a full sprint run
Coaching Points
- Backpedal Technique: Emphasize proper backpedaling technique, including short, controlled steps and maintaining a balanced stance.
- Breaking and Driving: Encourage defensive backs to explode into their break, using a powerful drive to close the distance to the ball.
- Ball Tracking: Stress the importance of tracking the ball throughout its flight, using peripheral vision to locate the football.
- Interception Technique: Reinforce proper hand placement and ball security when intercepting the pass.
- Body Control: Emphasize maintaining good body control throughout the drill, avoiding overextension or loss of balance.
Equipment
By mastering the Bomb Interception Drill, defensive backs will develop the skills and instincts necessary to excel in deep coverage and create game-changing turnovers.
