The Horseshoe Drill: Mastering Field Goal Accuracy
The Horseshoe Drill is designed to enhance a kicker’s accuracy and consistency when attempting field goals from various angles and distances. By simulating game-like conditions and emphasizing proper kicking mechanics, this drill promotes confidence and mental toughness.
Purpose
- Accuracy and Consistency: Improves the kicker’s ability to make field goals from different angles and distances.
- Mental Toughness: Develops the kicker’s ability to perform under pressure and consistently execute their kicking routine.
- Game Simulation: Replicates the various field goal attempts a kicker may face during a game.
Description
Drill Setup
- Mark a series of kicking positions on the field, forming a horseshoe shape.
- Start at the 10-yard line on the left hashmark and progress backward in 5-yard increments.
- Once reaching the desired depth, begin moving towards the right hashmark in the same pattern.
- From there move up back to the 10-yard line in 5-yards steps.
Drill Execution
- Kicking Positions: The kicker attempts field goals from each marked position within the horseshoe pattern.
- Kicking Routine: The kicker should execute their normal pre-kick routine for each attempt, focusing on consistency and mental preparation.
- One-Attempt Mentality: To simulate game conditions, the kicker should only attempt one kick from each position.
Progressions and Variations
- Defensive Pressure: Incorporate a kicking unit and return team to simulate game-like pressure.
- Weather Conditions: Practice kicking in various weather conditions to develop adaptability.
- Different Ball Types: Use different types of footballs (wet balls, frozen balls when practicing for a cold weather game in warm environment, warmed up balls when practicing for a hot weather game in cold environment), to simulate various conditions.
Coaching Points
- Kicking Mechanics: Emphasize proper kicking mechanics, including stance, approach, and follow-through.
- Mental Preparation: Encourage the kicker to develop a pre-kick routine and maintain focus throughout the drill.
- Pressure Simulation: Create a pressure-filled environment by incorporating penalties or conditioning exercises for missed kicks.
- Data Tracking: Record the kicker’s performance from each position to identify areas for improvement.
- Visualization: Encourage the kicker to visualize successful kicks and build confidence.
Equipment
By consistently practicing the Horseshoe Drill, kickers will develop the accuracy, mental toughness, and confidence needed to excel in pressure-filled situations.
