Forge a Cohesive Defense: The Perfect Play Drill
The Perfect Play Drill is a cornerstone exercise for building a well-oiled defensive unit. It emphasizes the importance of teamwork, proper assignment execution, and disciplined pursuit angles, ultimately creating a cohesive and effective defense.
Purpose
- Teamwork and Communication: This drill fosters a sense of collective responsibility, requiring each player to perform their assigned tasks within the defensive scheme and rely on their teammates to fulfill theirs.
- Assignment Execution: Players refine their ability to execute their specific defensive assignments, including penetration for defensive linemen, correct first steps for linebackers, and proper coverage responsibilities for secondary players.
- Pursuit Angles: The drill hones pursuit angles, particularly on sweep plays where players must react quickly and pursue the ball carrier at the appropriate angle to limit space and prevent big gains.
- Conditioning: The continuous pursuit repetitions throughout the drill provide a valuable conditioning benefit, enhancing overall defensive endurance.
Description
Drill Setup
- Ball Placement: Place the football in the center of the field, ideally at the 40-yard line. A longer field allows for more realistic pursuit angles, especially for cornerbacks on the opposite side of the field.
- Ball Carriers: Position two fast players (typically defensive backs) as ball carriers, one on each hashmark approximately five yards behind the football.
- Defensive Alignment: Line up your entire defensive unit on the ball, utilizing cones or lineman-split marker (optional) for easier initial alignment. You can eventually utilize cones to mark receiver positions as well.
Drill Execution
- Play Call and Coverage: The coach calls out a defensive formation, coverage scheme, and potentially a stunt or blitz variation.
- Ball Carrier Action: On the snap call, another player or the coach simulates the quarterback by picking up the football and pitching it to one of the designated ball carriers.
- Ball Carrier Route: Upon receiving the pitch, both ball carriers sprint laterally towards their respective sidelines, staying parallel to the line of scrimmage (LOS). Once they reach the numbers (outside the tackle positions), they cut upfield, maintaining a course that avoids defenders but keeps them inbounds.
- Defensive Execution: All defensive players execute their assigned first steps and pursuit techniques. They should pursue the ball carrier aggressively but maintain proper pursuit angles.
- Simulated Tackle: Defensive players touch the ball carrier with both hands at the hips, simulating a tackle without actually bringing him to the ground or impeding his forward progress. This allows the drill to continue for the remaining defenders to execute their pursuit responsibilities.
Variation
- Field Position Variation: Vary the starting point of the football by placing it on either hashmark and adjust the lineup of the potential ballcarriers accordingly. The majority of plays in a real game occur on one hash or the other, so this variation adds realism.
- Cutback Option: Allow the ball carrier to cut back inside the numbers (but not further) on occasion. This challenges the pursuit angles of the interior defenders and simulates a more dynamic running situation.
Coaching Points
- Assignment First, Pursuit Second: Emphasize the importance of players executing their assigned defensive tasks before initiating pursuit. Defensive linemen should focus on penetration and stunts, linebackers should take the correct first steps according to the play call, and secondary players should prioritize their coverage responsibilities.
- Simulated Tackling Technique: Ensure players practice proper tackling form by touching the ball carrier’s hips with both hands during the simulated tackle. This reinforces good tackling habits without unnecessary contact during the drill.
- Maintain Pursuit Lanes: While pursuing the ball carrier, players should avoid impeding the progress of teammates who have deeper pursuit angles. Maintaining proper pursuit lanes allows for a more coordinated and efficient defensive effort.
- Communication: Encourage communication within the defense, especially when incorporating variations like cutbacks. Clear communication helps players adjust their pursuit angles and assignments based on the developing situation.

By incorporating the Perfect Play Drill into your defensive practice routine, you’ll cultivate a more unified and disciplined defensive unit:
- Stronger Teamwork: Develops a strong sense of teamwork and reliance on teammates, crucial for a successful defense.
- Sharpened Assignments: Refines players’ ability to execute their specific defensive assignments with precision and consistency.
- Improved Pursuit Angles: Trains players to take efficient pursuit angles, minimizing cutback opportunities and limiting yardage gained by ball carriers.
- Enhanced Conditioning: Provides a valuable conditioning tool that improves overall defensive stamina and endurance.
- Game-Ready Preparation: Prepares players for the demands of a real game by simulating various offensive formations, coverage schemes,
