Mastering the Run: Specific Run Block Drills for Running Backs
Specific Run Block Drills are a game-changer for developing versatile running backs who can excel in various run blocking scenarios. This drill series hones their ability to execute specific blocks for different running plays, ensuring they create running lanes and pave the way for offensive success.
Purpose
- Develop Run Blocking Technique: This drill series focuses on teaching and refining proper blocking techniques for various run plays. Running backs learn how to effectively block defenders based on their position in the formation and the specific play design.
- Create Running Lanes: By mastering different blocks, running backs gain the skills to seal defenders and open up running lanes for the ball carrier.
- Improve Scheme Versatility: These drills equip running backs with the ability to adapt to different offensive schemes and blocking assignments. This makes them more valuable assets on the field, capable of contributing to a variety of running plays.
Description
Drill Setup
- Clearly explain the running play and the specific blocking assignment for the running back.
- Discuss the defender’s likely reaction and how the running back should adjust their block accordingly.
Drill Variations
Lead Blocking
- 2-Back Set: Utilize a blocking bag positioned as the designated linebacker target. The running back practices proper footwork, hand placement, and pad level for a forceful lead block, driving the defender off the line of scrimmage and creating a running lane for the ball carrier in the backfield.
- WR Sweep: Introduce a player holding a shield as the “defensive end” the running back needs to block on a sweep play. The running back practices sealing the defender outside, using proper angles and techniques to force the defender away from the play and open up the edge for the running back or wide receiver carrying the ball.
- Kickout Block (i.e. for a Power Play): Utilize a blocking bag positioned as the designated defensive tackle target. The running back practices a forceful kick-out block, aiming to displace the defender laterally and create a running lane for the quarterback on an isolation play.
Coaching Points
- Footwork and Pad Level: Emphasize proper footwork and consistent pad level throughout the drill. This ensures optimal leverage and power transfer for effective blocks.
- Hand Placement: Focus on proper hand placement techniques for each specific block. This creates a strong base to control the defender and achieve the desired blocking outcome.
- Head Movement: Encourage running backs to maintain good head position with eyes up, allowing them to track the defender and react to potential changes in direction.
- Target Acquisition: Reinforce the importance of identifying the correct defender to block based on the play design. Running backs need to quickly locate their assignment and initiate the block promptly.
- Finishing the Block: Stress the importance of “finishing the block” by driving the defender out of their designated area and sustaining the block until the play unfolds.
Equipment
