The Star Drill is a fundamental exercise designed to refine a defensive back’s reaction to the quarterback’s throwing motion. This drill hones the ability to recognize the “trigger” (the QB’s non-throwing hand leaving the ball) and execute an explosive break in any direction while maintaining strict eye discipline.
Description
Drill Setup
- Passer: A coach or designated player acts as the quarterback, holding a football.
- Defensive Back: The active player lines up approximately 4-5 yards directly in front of the coach.
- Other players: position themselves so they can clearly see the coach from the front without obstructing the active player’s path.
Drill Excecution
The Backpedal: On command, the player begins a controlled backpedal away from the coach.
The Trigger: The coach initiates a throwing motion. The moment the non-throwing hand leaves the football, the active player must shout “BALL!” and immediately break their backpedal.
Group Sync: Simultaneously, all waiting players must also shout “BALL!” the instant they recognize the trigger.
The Break: The player sprints toward one of six predefined directions based on the rep:
- 45° forward (Left)
- 90° lateral (Left)
- 45° deep/backward—requires a “turn and run” (Left)
- 45° forward (Right)
- 90° lateral (Right)
- 45° deep/backward—requires a “turn and run” (Right)
The Catch: The player maintains eye contact with the coach/ball throughout the sprint and completes the catch.
Repetitions
- Perform 1 or 2 repetitions for each of the six directions per player, depending on the number of athletes and available time.
Coaching Points
- Clean Break: Emphasize a sharp, explosive transition from the backpedal to the sprint without extra “false steps”.
- Eye Discipline: Eyes must remain glued to the ball/quarterback throughout the entire movement.
- Secure the Catch: Focus on “tucking” the ball away; the eyes should follow the ball into the hands until it is secured.
- Unified Verbal: There should be one distinct, collective shout of “BALL!” from the entire group, indicating everyone is reading the trigger at the same elite speed.
Equipment
- Balls
- eventually cones to mark the starting point and visualize the directional target (as especially beginners sometimes have difficulties to understand the requested direction)
